Went to the Piazza Maggiore after breakfast. It is the historic centre of town with the obligatory church/cathedral (Basilica del Santo Petronio). We visited the City library first. It is a very cool library, very modern but with a beautiful old ceiling. Couldn't do much reading as it is all in Italian.

It was the Church after that. The most interesting thing in the church other than the ...

... to Santa Maria dell Vitae, another city centre church (there are many in case you hadn't noticed by now) with some great art. The highlight of this church though is a sculpture set in red terracotta, showing the three Marys lamenting over the body of the Christ. They are all so clearly devastated that, as well as being life size, the figures are truly life like. The whole set has been accurately described as "a petrified scream". Simply wonderful. What is really hard ...

... not one church, but seven. With a mind numbing history and architecture. Joy has taken a zillion photos, which we will try to load soon. One problem with this hotel is that the Internet is very slow for loading photos, and we have to pay for it. Hmmm - like being back in the Dublin tour hotels! We'll get them up as soon as we can honest.

Love to all, and many thanks for following our travels. Do keep reading ...

Michael had seen enough in about 30 minutes so went off to explore Bologna on his own. First of all it is a very historic city. You can see, without being told, that every single building has a long and fascinating history. Almost every building (and there are many) has its own architectural style. Everywhere you look, there ...

... one that told us about the buffets that many restaurants have. For the price of one drink, you can eat all you want between about 5 -7 pm. We did that one night at his recommended place and the food was great.

Bologna is not on the big tourist map, but that's part of the charm. If you're a foodie at all, then you have to give this place a visit. You won't lose any weight here, but you'll be damn happy you came.
