      ... a a local ( Micky) and showed us many interesting things, including a real review of the fish market as his wife is Japanese and he spends a lot of time buying fish for sashimi there. Of note were the imprints in the old columns which specified the minimum size shellfish and whole fish that could be sold there. Marco Polos house was just an old house, not sign posted.       ... Fortunately the larger bridges over the Grand Canal have a ramp up one edge of the steps so things can be wheeled around but the majority don't, so if you close your eyes you can hear this constant "bump, bump, bump, bump" as trolleys and suitcases bump from one step to the next!

      Then there are the gondolas......everywhere, as you would expect, but go back a couple of hundred years and there were up to 10,000 gondolas in use here, ...

      After St. Mark's we headed across the canal to visit the San Salut, the church built after a plague had wiped out a third of the city.
