Japan stop over

The oldest castle in Japan
We've spent one night in Matsumoto, at a nice little hostel that gave us bikes for free! So we explored Matsumoto, which is not very big and very "bike-friendly", and visited Matsumoto Castle. Suwa lake and geyser

Matsumoto city and castle
... and there was barely space for two people to pass. Also some of the steps were 40 cm apart which was tough for us, but even tougher for some of the tiny Japanese pensioners who were sightseeing there.
At the end of the castle tour there is a moon viewing room that opens up on three sides. It must be wonderful to sit in the room on a warm evening watching the moon rise.

Tateyama National Park
... stroll. The rivers here have very artificial banking and there seem to be lots of mechanism controlling the water flow.
Back in the car we drove the short distance to the Murodo junction only to be told that the road was closed to all but local traffic and that we would have to drive back to Tateyama Station and catch a cable railway (a bit like a funicular) and a bus. None of the Guide books told us that we could not drive there.
