... and their train life, but is still strange to witness it yourself. As soon as the train sets itself in motion, the people change from quiet and non-expressive to shouting and laughing. Bento-boxes (lunch packages) are opened and snacks are shared between strangers. It's some sort of a "we're all in it together"-like atmosphere. I had a talk with an elder person sitting next to me, who turned out to be a keen hiker as well. Odd how ...

      Update time!

We arrived in Ito by shinkansen, the super fast bullet train that Japan is known for, and headed to our inn with an expectation of some peace and quiet and a hot bath (a soak in a traditional onsen). What we didn't expect was just how amazing our stay would be! As we happened upon the building after a tiny stroll down the hill with our already heavy packs we turned onto a small side street to behold the 100 year old ...

... find a nice place to eat. We found ourselves a nice fish restaurant. Once we were in we noticed that the entire menu and everything in the restaurant was in Japanese only and nothing in english but the waitress had the translations written down in her notebook so we eventually managed to order. I ordered what i think was a fish-hamburger (well that's how it was translated anyway and we both ordered sake to make the whole experience ...
