We thought we were pretty good at catching trains. This morning we managed to catch the wrong one which set us back a couple of hours. Quite a few train changes required in our trip to the Izu peninsula which is (normally) a couple of hours south of Tokyo. We packed up our gear and I'm glad we took the approach of having a base for a week and doing day trips, rather than packing up an switching accommodation every day or two. It took about an hour to pack about a quarter of ...

Commodore Perry returned to Japan in 1854 to find out that the Japanese had prepared a treaty accepting almost ...

A travel blog entry by joanyoung on May 12, 2015

Another action-packed day. It is too late to do a detailed journal entry tonight so I am writing it in point form for now; - Volcano warning in Hakone area has been upgraded from 1 to 2. Therefore some activities in this area have been suspended including the gondola ride up the mountain that had been scheduled. - Typhoon has hit Okinawa in southern Japan. Therefore it will bring some heavy rains tonight. - It is very cloudy in Hakone today. Need to check if the ...

... with your fellow bathers while making sure you make as little waves as possible. Oh, completely naked by the way, just with a small white towel placed on top of your head so it won't get wet. And then... nothing. Just relaxing, listening to the running water of the fountain and perhaps some small talk. The strange thing is: it really works. You DO feel incredibly relaxed when you finally go back to the changing room. And even ...
