For a treat, headed to this tourist hotspot for some beach time. All inclusive hotel sounded great after staying in people´s houses and living on rice and beans, but it was rather shabby to say the least! Hotel food buffet pretty gross (apart from breakfast which ...
Varadero, Cuba chicas-latinas... It was close to a beach, but I was in no rush to hang out on one. We did go in, but the owner said that he was full, but had booked us in the centre of town. Bonus !!! We followed him in, grabbed the room, stuck the car in the garage and walked around. There was a main square with the usual Jose Marti statue, but this time in bronze. The main church was closed, but there were some other nice buildings. We walked over to the Versalles ...

Our first full day in Cuba. We begin with a trip to the Front Desk to see if they have a new room for us. The elevator is still broken and no repair in site. We are told "Come back again tomorrow"! What can we do, this is Cuba and Cuban time. We find the restuarant and experience our first Cuban meal.
Varadero, Cuba swampbottomgurlSunday, we squeeze our way into mom and dad's cab to Havana. With 7 of us stuffed in, it means only my dad and the driver have seatbelts on. It's certainly not the most comfortable two hours of the trip, but we save over $50 and an hour doing this. :) The cramped quarters are more than compensated for by our great driver, who has good English and tells us about the north of Matanzas we're passing through. On the trip to Varadero, I ...
Matanzas, Cuba mbgower... flight. This gave me plenty of time for conversation, book reading, and of course, gazing out the window. First thought. North Americans LOVE rectangles. Love 'em! I mean we are cuckoo for cocoa rectangles (too obscure?) They are everywhere. The land, as spread out as it is, is largely covered in right angled polygons of all varieties. Not very round earthian. That's it, the whole observation, and that's what I name the entry after. What ...
Veradero, Cuba findingnine... to visit my new home on Tuesday. For those of you interested in looking up where I will be living, the region is called Azua, and I will be near a town called Amiama Gomez. I will have more information after my site visit. As always thank you for the continued letters, packages and emails! It is always great to hear from everyone at home and be able to keep up with your lives a little! Happy Birthday to Kelly, Aunt Sue, Brad, Reaghan, Sara, Chris, and Ryan.
Matanzas, Dominican Republic jbires... and I where medical room arrest for we had to get a shot on the butt. I guess we had bad reaction to the 'Cuban' Mosquitos. No sun, no ocean, no sun lotion, no citrus, no no no... what a way to enjoy our time away. No worries we made the most of it with all the meds and thanks to Nurse Nadia and Pete who were ...
