A travel blog entry by rtauck

Dear Friends of the Travel Pod,

The Arctic Circle in August -- hard to believe I am here. I hope you enjoy my blog journey if I am able to post ... little internet service..., very intermittent. I am on a CDP Expedition along Greenland and Canada's Northwest Territories for two weeks; along with French guests,

Leviathans of the Deep

Our final full day in Greenland is gorgeous, with clear skies and brilliant sun reflecting on a sea that seems full of ice. We have no idea what has happened overnight, but there are many more small icebergs today, and they are cramming into the harbor. We take a small whale-watching boat just large enough for our group plus one lucky lady from Germany. It is fast and comfortable, but it feels like we ...

Dinner in Oqaatsut Village

... dinner our guide takes us on a walk through the village, and then we cruise back to Ilulissat. This is the first day where it has been mostly cloudy. Approaching Ilulissat we encounter a lot of fog and mist around the icebergs. The fog adds an ethereal beauty to the scene, but it also conjures up images of the Titanic – especially when the captain veers in one direction or another to avoid a collision. Another wonderful adventure in ...

The cook has made a fabulous breakfast this morning of crepes topped with chocolate and jams, with some fresh fruit and eggs and bacon with a selection of cereals. There are also some leftovers from last night to sample. We check out of the cabins by 10am since they must be readied for the people on the next boat arriving at 2pm, which ...

Just two days before, a massive part of the face of the glacier calved into the water and created a tsunami that was about 45 feet high. Even though the glacier is a mile or so away from the camp, the wave was ...

Hotel very comfortable. Friendly stuff. Everything clean. Good food and breakfast. Transfer from/to Airport well organized. Great views to Icefjord from rooms. Beware of the Igloo. They need some renovation. Not worth the price.
