Port Douglas (Or: Our Last Moments Of Warmth)

After saying our goodbyes to Shannon and Paul at Cairnes, we went to Port Douglas to spend a few days before heading off to New Zealand. Port Douglas is a cute resort town with a beautiful, large stretch of beach called the four-mile beach, which seemed like a wierd name since Ozzies use the metric system. But it was incredibly beautiful and we spent a good amount of time playing frisbee and soaking up the sun. We knew it would be cold back in Sydney (the city had gotten it's first snow since...

... up balls of sand, or reading. I didn’t swim in the sea as it is now stinger (or jellyfish) season, and they can be either cripplingly painful or deadly.

I was advised to do cane toad racing, which one of the bars offer, but went into town at 8:30 in the evening, only to be told the only race of the night was at 7pm. Port Douglas was surprising in that respect, as there didn’t seem to be any nightlife, which is ...

In the jungle, the mighty jungle...

... lodge, I had a kickass powernap and then started having a couple beers with the travel agents that were on our bus. Apparently, it's awesome to be a travel agent because tour companies send you on free promotional tours so they can hype up their product, and we had about ten of these guys and girls from all over Australia on our tour. Anyhow, they had to go and do some travel agent hotel tour and special dinner thing, but I started drinking with an old Aussie couple, and a middle ...

A Quick Stop up North-The Rainforests of Cape Trib

... little town with gorgeous views of Cape Trib and lots of cool bars with live music. I also passed one that had Cane Toad racing every night. Sounded interesting. I totally would've checked that out.

I spent that night at my hostel in Cairns. It was my last night there, and I went and saw 'Year One' at the movies with another traveler. This morning I got up bright and early to catch my bus and go off down the East Coast. Next stop: Mission Beach.

Port Douglas - welcome to the tropics

... Australia and now relished the challenge of deep sea swimming. Better still, the stinger suit was a nice shade of pale blue which she always looks nice in! By the days end she was swimming down under water (once she knew you have to hold your breath) to check out the sealife beneath the surface, just like a natural. The views beneath us were stunning and during the days different dive locations we saw giant clams, a vast array of ...

Aaahhh-stralia

... Cairns after a brief stay at the Whitsunday islands. Gympie overheated and we are still not really sure what caused it. We have since driven a further 800 kms with both the check oil lamp on, and the check engine lamp on. I really think that the auto-mechanic course would have been more useful than the Chemistry I took in high school. We finally made it to Cairns and scuba dived at the world's greatest reef. Our only disappointment was that one day was not enough. The colours ...

... 8-ball of cocaine up our bums? Get to the hostel and, guess what, it's raining. and raining. and raining. And we learn that it will probably rain for the next forever. So much for our sunshine holiday. We walk a mile into town and **** away a few hours until our medical. in the rain. Finally, get to the doctor, who by the way is eerily voodoo and looks like one of the voodoo priests I met in Haiti. And he then proceeds to crush our dreams, and Lyndsey ...

T is for Tourist - Kuranda and the Barron Falls

... Sky Rail - a massive high cable car type thing which takes you much higher than the railway and over the lush mountains back to Cairns. I got a little car to myself and got whizzed over the rainforest and past the Barron Falls. We got to stop off at two points on the way down, both to examine the vegetation and take advantage of the lookout points carefully placed near the falls. Finishing up I got to the bottom ...
