That’s the day we detoured to Pisa, not so much to see the Tower, but to get hard cash, debit and credit cards being mostly useless at restaurants, gas stations, small banks and souvenir shops here in Europe. One, they don’t want to pay the three percent off the top to Visa and Master Card and second they see Americans and they know you’ve got cash and they’re going to hold out for it.

including San Marino and Mont San Michel. It made a pleasant end to
the day and the end of the holiday. We dined outside yet again, in a
small square jammed full of dining tables from at least four
restaurants. We finally wandered back to the hotel, well after
darkness had fallen, admiring the flood-lit ancient city walls.

It started so well. Baguettes, Campos coffee and we were ready on time for the taxi to the airport. But then it didn't show! Calls later and we realised we needed to act fast to get the ryanair flight to the boat. Lucky for us a taxi had just started work and was in the street getting a coffee.
