Day 23: Following our arrival in Macon the previous evening, we moored overnight to be ready for our excursion to Cluny Abbey. We travelled through rolling rural countryside, forests, hills and through a couple of rustic villages to arrive at Cluny. The town and Abbey are one, the Abbey being the centre, with its protective walls, and outside the town, also surrounded by protective walls. Only about 10% of the original abbey ...

Another day along the coast. The route took us away from the sea although we did find a great view across to Ile D'Oleron from near La Tranche sur Mer. A particular feature of the coast is the marshes (Marais with various water beds for oysters, nets for shrimps and shortly eels at Marans. This evening we following hand drawn signs to a bike friendly campsite. It's ok with hot showers and a red sunset over the fields, onto La Rochelle ...

Day two in Lyon

... 4 sections, and the last two sections were of miniature art creations. What an amazing skill to have to be able to reproduce entire scenes/buildings/settings as a miniature! Anyway, we had a nice dinner in Vieux Lyon tonight consisting of a wonderful beef fondue and we are in for the night...the 200 or so stairs to our hotel pretty much does us in every night! One more full day in France left tomorrow ...

We could see some recent modern building around this area, so there was rebuilding going on around Lyon as well. It turned out to be another large shopping mall (apparently Lyon has 3), so I was in my element.
