Busy morning to accommodate all the unpacked items so carefully arranged on the journey from Aachen. But alas I have an Uncle who passed away exactly a year ago to the day! His wife, Aunty Mia could hardly wait to welcome me so that I could go through the volumes of clothing – of outstanding quality and condition; too good for just anybody to wear – for me to try on and take to Australia. At 87 Mia is very active but showing signs of a shrinking world.

With Norbert and Brunhild returning to their normal routine as teachers at nearby schools, I am left to explore downtown Gladbeck by bicycle! What fun! It was de ja vu riding around the town like a young boy again.
Exhausted, I sat down at the nearest Eis Cafe and ordered a large Eis-Becher (Ice cream sundae) and watched the ...

Norbert took me on a nostalgic tour of my early childhood to the age of 11, visiting the town centre, the primary schools that I had attended and 57 Duererstrasse - my former home!

Another highlight in the afternoon was visiting my Mother's youngest brother Arnold in Wuelfenrath which was about an hour and a half's drive away via the autoban. We picked up Auntie Mia on the way, the widow of my Mother's other brother - ...

After almost missing my train from Herzogenrath to Gladbeck, I was relieved to experience a Regional train which is generally far more crowded with local commuters. It was a joy to be reunited with my cousin Brunhild (from my Mother's side) in the nigh darkness.

Norbert and Brunhild welcomed me to their home and we made plans for the following ...

... a figurine or mini-replica of the local monument or famous building as a souvenir. No such thing was to be found in Gelsenkirchen. Nonetheless I don’t regret coming here, my policy is to always try and stay where the match is being played. And besides, the unexpected bonus of a point earned away to the world champions casts a more positive glow on my visit. Hindsight is a wonderful thing. Roll on Glasgow next month.

      Tschuss.
