... but have a sizeable streak of bare rock running along just below their peaks (possibly karst - not sure though). These hills are separated from the main part of Veliko Tarnovo by the River Yantra, which looks very far below us. I haven't been down there yet. To my right is another hill, this time with Tsarevets Fortress on top of it - I've decided to visit it either tomorrow or on Thursday. I look forward to exploring Veliko Tarnovo; I think I have definitely landed on my feet ...

      ... full circle.

The only part of town that I had not yet explored was a large staircase next to a statue that I could see from my balcony. I finally went up this staircase, passed through a small park, and ended up next to the gravestone from my first hike in Tirnovo. My mouth agape, I realized that if I had only walked for a minute or two longer on my very first hike in VT, I would have been surprised to see a view of my hostel and a large staircase ...

      ... weeds.

Now is the time of the year for picking walnuts. We had Dan and Antonia to stay last week and they collected loads. Antonia used the last of the plums to make jam. We also took a trip to Shumen to see the massive concrete and stone monument to the founders of Bulgaria. It was built in 1981 to commemorate 1300 years since the first Bulgarian state was founded. The sheer size of ...
