... it was small but had the most amazing story to tell and frescos to view, perhaps the pick of all the churches we have visited. Veliko Tărnovo was the pick of Bulgarian towns visited and we enjoyed exploring the city in our free time and checking out the souvenir shops. One can certainly be inspired and amazed by churches, but also so jaded and numb they lose much-deserved interest. That happened to me in Italy last month after a several-days stretch of Catholic cathedrals being a highlight of nearly every city and town I visited. I even completely canceled my plans to go to Assisi in favor of spending a few more days at a Siena hostel. Hopefully Assisi will be more inspiring on my next trip to Italy.

... deck outside before retiring to a "great room" to view a documentary about the Tour D'Afrique, a 4 month bike journey from Cairo to Capetown. ... our first night in the hostel. We stayed in a great hostel (Hostel Mostel), but we slept in a 12 person dorm with bunk beds. This normally isn't a problem, but the German dude sleeping two feet from my face smelled like the worst homeless person you've ever smelled in your life. To steal from Louis C.K.: "He was ****. ... and stay and play in the front room?’ How could we refuse? We quickly gathered a few folk including Mitko with his accordion and had a fantastic musical evening till the wee small hours. Moneek, Ilse and Martin filled the house with music for a couple of days and planted a tree in the garden, to musical accompaniment of course. Then they headed off to explore Bulgaria in their Ford Transit van.
