Akumal

Much more expensive than anywhere else we've been (in our lives), this small American colony fortunately has a Mexican village just the other side of the motorway. Even so we still had a wonderful time, snorkelling with turtles and rays, watching dolphins and eating crisp sandwiches on the beach.

Monterrey

... day.

The surprising part, at least for me, was that I really enjoyed Monterrey. The city itself is interesting, and we explored several free museums and an interesting park. We also went for a nice long walk along a canal (not clear if this was a natural canal made pretty or a man-made canal). The entire length had been made into a park, where they hold concerts, yoga, have boatrides, whatever. There are also ...

First experience in Mexico (outside of Tijuana)

The whole stay here has just been strange. The first morning here I preached in a church - in spanish! First time since 2006! Even though I took out my guages and put in clear spacers, they asked me to take them out, as well as my eyebrow ring. They said I need to be "all things to all men" although that is not what it is talking about. The ministry gave us a nice little apartment for 5 days (full of cockroaches) in a ...

The Journey Begins...

I am sitting here in the middle of Monterrey, Mexico. There is an air conditioner to my right and a clock ticking away to my left. All I can think about at this time is, "This is not what we came here for".
Rob is downstairs, having a meeting with the ministry whose base we are currently staying on. We arrived to the border of Mexico on Saturday morning. Starting at the Brownsville border, we bussed four and a half ...

Madness in Monterrey!

... we were in the city to meet my uncle Packie, who took time out of his busy schedule to show us around and entertain us. It was great to see him and catch up and get to see where he lives and works. He showed us around his schools and we met lots of his friends along the way. We had a few crazy journeys with his mental driving, definitely think he has God as his co ...

Monterrey, MX - Week 1 (Arrival)

... to a friend of hers who lives in Monterrey, Gabriela. As soon I arrived, I called Gabriela, who asked (almost like a mother) how I was, whether I have found an apartment, etc. and told me not to hesitate to contact her in case of emergency. She then took me around town. We had lunch and she helped me find a cell phone (no luck). Her personality was very friendly, almost flamboyant. Then, I moved into my apartment. It's ...

... take half an onion in the palm of your hand, and chop into it a whole bunch with a knife. Then turn the onion 90 degrees and chop it some more. Then you cut super thin slices off the chopped up end. RESULT = super teeny tiny onion bits. VERY important for guacamole making. We walked down to Akumal for some shopping but got distracted by a walk along a crushed coral path and an intriguing limestone field at the ...

Akumal, turtles and fish...

... the coast to Akumal. Along the way we got a good ocean side tour of the coast. Most of the coast down that way is very rocky. Along the way the ocean was rough and we all got wet. Finally we were at Akumal and behind the reef. It was much calmer behind the reef. We had a very good local guide who seemed to know exactly were to go. First was the turtles. We saw about 1/2 dozen of those. Some small and some quite large. They seems to know we were ...

... research methods. Initially it looked daunting, but after a few training sessions, we are now ready to start the real research. When we're not diving or learning about the species, we would be cleaning the buoys, kayaking in the bay to make sure that the tourists are not touching the turtles or standing on coral reefs, or standing at the entrance of the bay registering the group tours that come into the bay to snorkel.

Akumal 2007

... previous patrons described this resort as a 3 star on a 5 star beach so we didn't expect a Ritz. I'll add my own opinion to that statement...The superior rooms might be close to a 3 star (more like 2 and three quarters), but the standard rooms are more a straight-up 2 star accommodation. I've stayed at Super 8's and Days Inns that surpass these rooms. This refers to the room quality alone - not staff, food, etc so take it with a grain of salt. We loved the resort and would ...
