        Naantali, Finland

This morning we travelled to Turku from where we took a steam boat along the Finnish coast through the "Eastern Sea" (Gulf of Bothnia)) to the old village of Naantali. It was a beautiful boat ride where we saw ancient Finnish castles and churches, ship building yards (many of our yachts and ships are made in Finland), an oil refinery, and of course the beautiful Finnish countryside and boating. We had lunch at the Naantali Restaurant Amandis and made a quick visit to the ...

        Summer Cottage!

The Summer Cottage trip was fantastic, yet very rainy. My Host Dad and I drove the hour to Kustavi, and we were in for a surprise! Host dad was surprised when he saw all of the lights on at 10am. We got closer to the cottage and saw that there was a large jacket in front of the main door. Our first thought was that there was a bad robber inside. While I was looking at the newly renovated front, I saw someone in a towel move inside. Host Dad saw it too, and ...

The two archipelagos are divided by a deep (for around here) channel of water called the Skittet and between the two they form an almost solid land bridge between Finland and Sweden, there is only 20 miles or so from the westernmost large ...

After a good night's sleep we looked forward to a day of not doing very much. In other words, this entry will be short! It was a sticky, muggy day and indeed we did have a few drops of rain. Whether it was the humidity or whether it was sheer indolence but we couldn’t be bothered going to any worthwhile things like museums and churches and the like, even one with the intriguing name ...

        Plenty of Fish

For the past few days and today was no exception, we were experiencing and enjoying, typical high pressure weather, even though the actual pressures were not too high, about 1010 on average. This means that winds are usually light and any strength tends to come from the differential heating effect of sunlight over water as opposed to land ie the land warms up and heats the air which rises, resulting in coastal breezes. Now these breezes of ...
