Short stay in the Suite.

... we didn't feel like socializing with the chickens and got a penzion instead.

Luckily there was a Pension just near the campsite but unfortunatly they were full up except for the Suite. Fortunatly the Suite was only 28 Euros, Gotta love hotels in the middle of nowhere. Most of our campsites cost that much!

After a great nights sleep and a delicious breakfast we made our way to Krakow through the Tatras mountains.

Kasprowy Wierch

... was visible.

The last few tens of metres to the top were exhausting. We had been climbing for four hours and drunk three 1.5l bottles of water and iced tea in the process. Every muscle was aching. I was also bright red with what I assumed, at the time, was exertion, and later discovered was sunburn. The true summit is another 40 minutes from the cable car station and cafe. We wimped out. As far as I am concerned, we climbed the mountain - all 1987m of it, more or ...

Oravsky Castle

... you to wait for your group on a lower level if you suffer from a fear of heights.

On the levels of the castle you will find some traditional tools used by people of Orava in the past, as well as paintings, musical instruments, weapons, furniture, clothes and animals that used to live here. Some of the towers and terraces of the castles are available for the tourists, and it's advisable to stick to your ...

The mountains

... like cycling, like I do. Riding down at a dizzy speed is really pleasant and fun, but then coming back is a pain.

What to see when you're in Bukowina? Take your trekking shoes and something warm to wear and go to feel the mountains. I especially recommend Dolina Pięciu Stawów Polskich, with the biggest waterfall in Poland - Siklawa (about 3.5h hours way up and 2.5h way down). There is a small mountain hostel in the ...

Tantrum of the Tatras - Almost home

... the night carried on from 3PM, when we arrived, to 10PM, when we went to bed on the hard floor of the communal room. The beer was quite cheap, and we were contending to see who could chat up the cute waitress first, though realistically, I think we were both too drunk toward the end to try.
The storm moved in, the windows got painted white, and the rain moved in, lightning flashed, one thunder, lightning one thunder, and we thought the mountain was collapsing around us ...

Onwards along the Tatranska Magistrala

... good. We passed below a braided waterfall which was coming down from the hanging valley above. We met what appeared to be a school group, of several dozen young people, coming down the trail, so we waited until they all went by. Finally we arrived at Téryho, which sat at the edge of the cliff looking down the valley. We went upstairs to the restaurant and ordered tea. Not the "Tatranská" kind, which had 52% alcohol content, but the regular kind ...

Over the crest and into Poland

... boots off! We looked around a bit and organized our gear. The hut is two floors high, with all the sleeping areas upstairs and the dining area and bar downstairs. We both ordered goulash for dinner, which was very good. Although not Hungarian. After dinner we sat and chatted to two British men at the next table, who were actually planning to hike to Podbanské tomorrow. Bedtime was early tonight, as both of us were tired. Hopefully our roommates wouldn't be up too late.

Everything is suddenly easy again

Given that there is no phone in my room, the hotel can't (or won't) give me a wake up call. I was worried that I would somehow sleep in late and miss my joyful rendezvous with Jane, who is flying in from Toronto, at the airport. Accordingly, I wake up basically every half hour during the night and check my watch. At around 6am, as the hotel and neighbouring apartment blocks stir noisily into their weekday motion, I figure I'll just get up and go. By the time ...

Slovakia - And the Dominant Gender Study

... upons. Has it something to do with their uptightness, I wonder? Bottom line: The men of Serbia are the biggest and strongest of all the men we encountered in the Balkans. But does strength and size alone make them the dominant gender? If it were possible to take all of the female Serbs and transplant them to Canada and the U.S. they would become gender dominant in days. In Serbia however, it's a you-pick-em. In Turkey there is so little male-female interaction that it's ...
