Meeting my new family

... many of us who finished off our bottles over the course of the night. I ended up staying up pretty late talking to a Kiwi, Craig.

Other comments I have. The tents are quite nice and they look VERY durable which is particularly important. We divided into cook crews and I somehow ended up on two. Weird, the North American group (me plus my Canadians) put me on theirs and Pete and Craig thought I was going to be with them. I decided to stay with ...

Where the Bullfight Was Born

... No words or pictures could fully capture the essence of this city, you just have to be there to fully experience its beauty. I then explored the city, going to places that are not commonly visited by tourists, I did some shopping, had a beer and tapas at a small restaurant and then walked through the park. Unfortunately, the day was cut short due to time restrictions and I did not have the chance to do everything I wanted to do but I will definitely be back.

Granada(2)

Monkeying Around

Well, well, well...after being MIA for quite a few weeks, I'll try to give you the cliff-notes version of several lovely places I've been buzzing around and what I've been up to. This weekend I went to Gibraltar! Monkeys, views to die for of Southern Spain and Morocco and some damn fine Fish and Chips and Carlsberg! Every year around 4 million people cross La Linea here to see this little speck of England attached to the ...

Gibraltar: Don't Feed the Apes!

... you. And there are funny signs that depict what might happen if you misbehave. There is one showing a man mocking a monkey, then the next image is of the monkey biting his leg. The tour took us all around Gibraltar, and we could see the various influences, Roman, Moorish, Spanish, and British. They are a very multicultural society, with most religions practiced with no conflict. There are four synagogues and at least two mosques (one on the south end ...

Gibraltar: A Taste of Britain and Monkey Attacks

... is the fact that Britain has expensive radio equipment there which can listen in on practically all conversations in the Western Mediterranean. Spain obviously wants Gibraltar back. After all, it is hundreds of miles away from Britain and only has a contiguous border with Spain. Plus, between 1462 (when it was reconquered from the Mores) and 1704 (when Britain won it in battle), it was territory of the Spanish crown. British doesn't want to give ...

I Heart Gibraltar Monkeys

Today we headed to the small town of La Linea, Spain, to walk across the border to Gibraltar, which is of course the home of the famous rock. Even at a distance the rock is quite an impressive sight! This next part is for the CAM kids who are reading this... you'll love it. To get to the rock, you have to cross the single runway of Gibraltar's airport, which in itself is already sweet, but just as we walked up to the ...

Estepona By Bus

... restaurants along the promenade. By the time we had wandered up into the harbour it was getting on for lunchtime and we were getting hungry so we stopped for Pizza in one of the marina restaurants and it was quite pleasant to sit and watch the world go by and the cost altogether was 26 euros. From the harbour during the afternoon we wandered back along the ...

Don´t arrest me.... please!

... took 3 hours, which passed surprisingly quickly. I had no idea what Gibraltar looked like, but 15 mins before the bus journey was due to end I spotted a huge rock jutting out of the otherwise flat countryside, and I jested to Christina (the German girl), "Ha! That must be Gibraltar, it even has the British weather". Much to my disgust, it WAS Gibraltar. I kid you not, up until the border there was blue skies and sunshine, but step across into British soil and BAM ...

Eeeeee, i'n't this lovely

... nobody has ever made a serious attempt to capture it; during WW2 it was never even bombed (small comfort to the citizens who were evacuated "for safety" to blitz-ravaged London). Nearby, part of the 30km+ of WW2 tunnels is also open to the public. Larger (thanks to dynamite) and featuring electric lighting, internal buildings, and such mod-cons, these tunnels were home to tens of thousands of people for years at a time: my guide ...
