... Stonegarth in Keswick. It is a lovely B and B. The bathroom has a spa bath and walk in shower and the mirror becomes a TV - haven't seen this before. We had a cup of coffee and then went for a walk into Keswick. We found a map which showed it would take us a while to walk to the lake known as Derwent Water so we turned around and went to an Italian restaurant, Casa Bella, for a pizza. We walked back to the B and B and watched yet another Grand ...
... then up to our room. We then took our morning cabby's advice and headed for the carvery for a cheap and filling buffet roast looking straight out over the lake.
Yorkshire – a Poem
Your valleys are called dales
Your pubs serve fine ales
The weather is often dreary
But your people are cheery
Your meadows are green
And full English breakfasts keep us lean
We got away early as this was to be one of our longest days at 20km. There was more sunshine than any day so far, so it was t-shirts again, and we even put our sunnies on! More luscious blackberries awaited us demanding to be eaten, along with a few beautiful raspberries.
We crossed countless meadows, some very boggy, and followed the crystal clear Lune River through groves of alder and oak. When our boots got too muddy they would invariably be cleaned as we ...
Headed off later than hoped but reached Stratford-on-Avon around 1pm. Full of tourists. Lots of people enjoying the weather - overcast but warm. Found a beaut market and enjoyed looking around. Waited 50 minutes for toasted sandwiches that didn't come, so after waiting that length of time, followed Dave's lead and walked out. Ended up with a sausage in a roll from one of the market vendor's. Not a patch on Tasman sausages and HXUC market day bread! No time to see ...
Another fine breakfast fuelled us up for another day on the trail. Early progress was hampered by the need to stop, pick and eat some of the many ripe blackberries growing by the side of the track. It was overcast still but windless and warm, so it was down to t-shirts until around lunch time when we passed through the beautiful little village of Dent, home of the geology pioneer ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Applegarth Villa & JR's Restaurant Windermere
My husband and I stayed at this hotel in Dec 2004. We enjoyed many aspects of the hotel - good location, nice decor, very comfy four poster bed, freshly cooked breakfast. However, there were some definite downsides which we feel the owners should rectify as they would stop us from returning.
Great hotel, Great food, Great people.
After our recent trip to Malta [see Karanne Hotel St Pauls Bay], we decided to cheer ourselves up with a short stay in the lakes, and chose The Applegarth on the recomendations on this site. I'm pleased to say we had a fantastic time, the hotel is very elegant and has a wonderful relaxed atmosphere. The bar is well stocked, the food is of excellent quality and the rooms are well equipped and very comfortable - we'll be going back and recommend you do too.
We stayed at the Applegarth Hotel for a night at the beginning of November 04. We were given a superior double, although we felt the room wasn't very much bigger than a standard room, with no defining features to make it superior. However the hotel itself was lovely, the breakfast was good and the staff were very friendly. Be warned that if you stay here hoping to be near Lake Windermere it is actually 1.5 miles to the lake - and its a steep hill to climb on the way back up!
We've just spend a wonderful weekend in the Applegarth and would love to go back as soon as possible! What a find! It's a beautiful hotel with a warm, friendly atmosphere. It has been beautifully renovated and has been very tastefully decorated. The owners are lovely people and make you feel very welcome whilst discreetly giving you your own space. The food was fabulous and definitely 4-star standard. We can't wait to go back!
Nice place but too cold in our room
Very nice place with lovely owners. Our major complaint was that our corner room was too cold. A major storm with gale force winds turned our lovely room quite cold. We had to use the hairdryer to warm up the place! They didn't turn on the heat till late in the afternoon and we were quite chilly...I had to put my hoodie on!
Having just spent 4 nights at the beginning of September in the Applegarth Hotel, I have nothing but praise! Ideally situated in a quiet street, approx 15-20 mins walk from Lake Windermere & an excellent base to explore the Lake District. The building itself is fabulous - beautifully restored with many original features - very Arts & Crafts/Art Nouveau style. We stayed in Room 2 - Superior 4 Poster & corner bath - with gorgeous views across the fells. Do try their restaurant, all local produce, very reasonably priced & the food is excellent. Lovely breakfasts too! Friendly, attentive staff. Very relaxing environment. Overall, highly recommended.
We found this place by chance whilst looking for a base to go walking from. We've been back three times now and the place just seems to get better every time. Great food, great rooms and excellent atmosphere. Highly recomend the four poster rooms and the evening meals!
A lucky find
We found this place by chance and have been smiling at our good fortune ever since. This family run hotel is beautifully furnished, comfortable with a relaxed atmosphere. Service is friendly, efficient and unstuffy. The food is excellent, there is decent wine list and the four poster bedroom was just heaven. I can and will hearitly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to relax and get away from it all - a true home from home.
We stumbled upon the Applegarth Hotel quite by chance on a busy bank holiday Sunday, having passed endless NO VACANCIES signs in windows along the way. Upon entering the hotel we immediately felt at home and were delighted when Suzanne the owner informed us that, yes, she did have room for the night, as someone had unexpectedly checked out. We had a beautiful four poster room which reflected the standard of the rest of the hotel. The bar was cosy and homely and the resturant was excellent. The owners have clearly gone to a lot of trouble to make this a very pleasant place to visit. The Applegarth is highly recommended. It has a lovely relaxing, homely atmosphere and we shall certainly be back.
What a stay!
Spent last weekend at the Applegarth Hotel in Windermere and I was chuffed to bits with the quality of the place. Our four poster room had a corner bath and great views of lake windermere and I have to say the evening meals were fantastic.I would be happy to recommend this hotel to anyone at all. It is a must for anyone coming to the lake district.
