Today started sunny and we set off walking. Walked up hill and then down to the edge of Lake Derwentwater, to Hawes End, then along the shore to High Brandle How. Beautiful scenery of hills and the lake, but got wetter and wetter.
Then took the little ferry around the lake to Keswick, and did some more ...
... are from in the world, no one likes a cheat!” His dad was standing behind me and agreed that was a great truth. Scared me when he grunted, because I didn’t know it was his dad :P
Gary (landlord @ White Lion) offered me a job behind the bar from July 1 to July 7 for about 350 - 400 quid. So I will be returning here after I finish this WWOOFing experience with my next host. I am so excited about this opportunity. He is stoked to have an open ...
Having walked back down to the car, we were all desperate for a wee so we headed to Grange duck pond to use the facilities (at an outrageous 20p each). I hasten to add, we used the public conveniences there not the pond!
Next we headed off to Silverdale (the long way!) for tea and cake at Hazelwood Farm ngs. Bit of a disappointment that the cakes were a little dry and the lady serving them was a tad menopausal but we battled through.
... on the lakes or, at the least, strolls with their dogs in all weathers, as it always rains here. Every other person leading a dog! Did some shopping and then home. Theresa and I did another 2 km walk before dinner. Numerous walks in all directions, all neatly signposted as public walks through farms, over hills and along rivers and streams. Cumbria is beautiful scenery in all directions, overall higher, wilder and steeper than ...
We left Northumbria today , planning to return in October- so much more to see. Drove across the top of England. England at the north end is only about 80 miles wide. Emperor Hadrian built his wall across from coast to coast after his arrival in 112 AD. John had searched for it once before, in 1989 but failed to find it!! Amazing considering how large it is. Went to the National Park Office at Once Brewed, (next to the pub at Twice Brewed!!) Apparently the ...

Historical Traveler Reviews Applegarth Villa & JR's Restaurant Windermere
My husband and I stayed at this hotel in Dec 2004. We enjoyed many aspects of the hotel - good location, nice decor, very comfy four poster bed, freshly cooked breakfast. However, there were some definite downsides which we feel the owners should rectify as they would stop us from returning.
Great hotel, Great food, Great people.
After our recent trip to Malta [see Karanne Hotel St Pauls Bay], we decided to cheer ourselves up with a short stay in the lakes, and chose The Applegarth on the recomendations on this site. I'm pleased to say we had a fantastic time, the hotel is very elegant and has a wonderful relaxed atmosphere. The bar is well stocked, the food is of excellent quality and the rooms are well equipped and very comfortable - we'll be going back and recommend you do too.
We stayed at the Applegarth Hotel for a night at the beginning of November 04. We were given a superior double, although we felt the room wasn't very much bigger than a standard room, with no defining features to make it superior. However the hotel itself was lovely, the breakfast was good and the staff were very friendly. Be warned that if you stay here hoping to be near Lake Windermere it is actually 1.5 miles to the lake - and its a steep hill to climb on the way back up!
We've just spend a wonderful weekend in the Applegarth and would love to go back as soon as possible! What a find! It's a beautiful hotel with a warm, friendly atmosphere. It has been beautifully renovated and has been very tastefully decorated. The owners are lovely people and make you feel very welcome whilst discreetly giving you your own space. The food was fabulous and definitely 4-star standard. We can't wait to go back!
Nice place but too cold in our room
Very nice place with lovely owners. Our major complaint was that our corner room was too cold. A major storm with gale force winds turned our lovely room quite cold. We had to use the hairdryer to warm up the place! They didn't turn on the heat till late in the afternoon and we were quite chilly...I had to put my hoodie on!
Having just spent 4 nights at the beginning of September in the Applegarth Hotel, I have nothing but praise! Ideally situated in a quiet street, approx 15-20 mins walk from Lake Windermere & an excellent base to explore the Lake District. The building itself is fabulous - beautifully restored with many original features - very Arts & Crafts/Art Nouveau style. We stayed in Room 2 - Superior 4 Poster & corner bath - with gorgeous views across the fells. Do try their restaurant, all local produce, very reasonably priced & the food is excellent. Lovely breakfasts too! Friendly, attentive staff. Very relaxing environment. Overall, highly recommended.
We found this place by chance whilst looking for a base to go walking from. We've been back three times now and the place just seems to get better every time. Great food, great rooms and excellent atmosphere. Highly recomend the four poster rooms and the evening meals!
A lucky find
We found this place by chance and have been smiling at our good fortune ever since. This family run hotel is beautifully furnished, comfortable with a relaxed atmosphere. Service is friendly, efficient and unstuffy. The food is excellent, there is decent wine list and the four poster bedroom was just heaven. I can and will hearitly recommend this hotel to anyone wishing to relax and get away from it all - a true home from home.
We stumbled upon the Applegarth Hotel quite by chance on a busy bank holiday Sunday, having passed endless NO VACANCIES signs in windows along the way. Upon entering the hotel we immediately felt at home and were delighted when Suzanne the owner informed us that, yes, she did have room for the night, as someone had unexpectedly checked out. We had a beautiful four poster room which reflected the standard of the rest of the hotel. The bar was cosy and homely and the resturant was excellent. The owners have clearly gone to a lot of trouble to make this a very pleasant place to visit. The Applegarth is highly recommended. It has a lovely relaxing, homely atmosphere and we shall certainly be back.
What a stay!
Spent last weekend at the Applegarth Hotel in Windermere and I was chuffed to bits with the quality of the place. Our four poster room had a corner bath and great views of lake windermere and I have to say the evening meals were fantastic.I would be happy to recommend this hotel to anyone at all. It is a must for anyone coming to the lake district.
