... The best tree trunks were tied together as huge rafts and taken down the Rhine to the Netherlands. A lot of wood was needed for the shipping industries in the Netherlands and for the glass and mining industries. At Basel we are still in Switzerland but at dinner time we started moving down the Rhine to Breisach which we will reach at 2:00 am.
