They Said:
Even if for only one damp and chilly night, we finally got to see another city in Bavaria. Nuremberg is mostly a bombed out shell of its former self, redone since the war with more modern style architecture but still retaining the city's original mapping. This means tons of streets that are pedestrian only, and for the most part, this is how we enjoyed the city – simply by walking its ...
... an hour, but they did have to make 200 total (there is an error rate of about 1 in 10 though, but the errors are just sold at 2nd rate rather than first).
In order to make the piece, you have to get a blob (yes, blob) of liquefied glass and blow into it to begin the shaping process. Once there is a decent size bubble in the glass, they lower it into a wood mold and continue to blow the bubble bigger, all the while taking the desired shape. Once it is completely hollowed out ...
... The New Palace contained a huge rose garden and had a great view of the city. During our free time Jack, Suzanne and I wandered around town admiring the architecture. We stopped at a snack shop where I had a large soft pretzel and Coke for only 1.69 euros. Cheapest purchase I’ve made yet. Usually a Coke costs at least 2 euros ($3).
We were back on ship for a late lunch and passed time watching the countryside slide by and going through locks.
... and took buses to Nuremberg. We visited the Zeppelin Field where the big Nazi Rallies were held and the Hall of Justice where the Nuremberg Trials took place. Bought a souvenir pin at Market Square and had cokes at a bistro while waiting for the bus to take us back to the ship.
Our train ride up to Bamberg, in Bavaria, was one of the most frustrating yet. We got on the train just fine in Munich and had to switch over in Nurnberg. Our first train was running behind so we missed our connection by a few minutes. So we waited for an hour on the correct platform (according to the computer) for the next connecting train. That time came and went. Ticked off, we went down to the service counter and they said the ...
Bamberg, Bavaria, Germany unbound... There was even an ex hab on the team (Andre Nasredine) who scored a goal for us! To make the night even better we won 6-2 with some awesome goals and awesome saves!
Very happy with our decision to return to Nuremburg for the hockey game we left the following morning for Vienna. It was a long trip so we cut it in half and spent a night in Linz, Austria. Another gorgeous place to pass right on through!
... the local bar on the night we arrived. It was entertaining seeing all the locals. Just as the Italians don´t appear to be snobbish about wine, the Germans happily mix their beer with lemonade or coke. We did see one woman get a red wine and coke, which just seems wrong. One of the things I like about Germany (and Italy) is how accepted pets are. It´s quite normal to take your dog on the subway, or into shops, or even sometimes into restaurants.
Nuremberg, Bavaria, Germany andrewhubbard... was in German. It was less than an hour long. This theater was like five stories underground, it was amazing. The screen was the biggest screen i have ever seen in an indoor movie theater. After the movie we went back to the fair ground and rode the Ferris wheel since we didn't get to the night before because of the rain. It was fun. We then went back to the flat and relaxed a bit and made spaghetti for dinner. She put chopped carrots and peppers in the ...
Nuremberg, Germany celincline... Really the only thing missing is a few snow flakes (but I’m sure those will be on their way soon enough.)
School has been pretty busy lately. Classes have their normal routine, but there are additional things such as meetings and a birthday celebration for the director of the school…which strangely enough she singled me out as a 'great young international teacher’ told everyone the story of K College and why ...
... trusty Rick Steve's book as a guide, we toured the old town, snapping shots of old churches, fountains, and buildings, several of which were undergoing reconstruction. Then we wandered up to the castle where we were treated to great views of the town. After lunch (wurst in a cheese stick... yummy!) we headed back to the car and drove out to the Nazi Documentation Centre, located at the Nazi Parade grounds. What a fascinating museum! It ...
