Appart City Caen

This last weekend my program's group traveled to Normandy and Brittany. It was a very cool trip! On Saturday we drove from Paris to Caen, Normandy. We visited the Memorial de Caen, which is a museum/memorial from WWII. Caen was a city during WWII that was occupied by the Germans, and it was a major victory when the Allies were able to seize it. ... at each scene on the tapestry. Without it you would find it hard to depicher the story and miss the little details which bought the tapestry to life. <br> The town of Bayeux itself is gorgeous and miracouslouly escaped WWII bombing...even though it was only 10km inland from the D-Day beaches

... Britain along with steel floating docks. These docks provided the gateway for suppliers from Britain to France. The idea was masterminded by Churchill and it was an engineering first and still mind blowing all these years later. Not knowing much about D-Day the excellent 6 June 1944 museum situated right was shore proved to be extremely informative and a history lesson that we will not forget.

Arrived at Ouistreham just before dark and found an Aire de Service right on the beach and this time it was free! The downside was it was right next to the ferry terminal and the 6am ferry to Portmouth the next day was kill the tranquilo the next morning. Kim's Maison du Scooby cooked up a storm. Pork fajitas on rice - delicious. I gave it 5 stars.

... many. My French guide made the comment as we explored Normandy... "I may have been speaking German now to you if it were not for those that fought here." Their sacrifice affects many, and touches many... as my guide gave us the details of the American Cemetery, the Australian man next to me had to excuse himself. ... need two days, possibly three. One day was just long enough to drive through all the outdoor stuff.) We began on the east side of the stretch of beaches at Sword (one of the British points of attack) and moved our way westword through Juno (Canadian and British), Gold (British), and of course Omaha and Utah (mostly American). The areas around Sword and Juno were actually resort areas. Apparently they'd been popular summer seaside resorts ...

Saturday morning we packed up and headed out to Normandie. It was a carful and I mean literally. Agathe's parents and her brother will be staying there for two weeks, so we had a lot of stuff and a lot of animals, including the cat, dog, and the talking parrot, Coco. ... shooting down at them. Of course, thousands died trying. It was humbling to stand there, on a peaceful day, looking at miles and miles of quiet, empty beach, and trying to imagine what it must have been like. Horrifying would hardly cover it, I'm sure. The museum had a one hour montage of actual film taken that day, and although the terrain and towns were very recognizable, it was surreal to try to superimpose it on the peaceful ...

... I looked out of the window at 7am and all the cars had frost on their windows. Gulp. I set out too early and was met with freezing fog but this only improved the beauty of the drive. The mountains had lowered and I was driving up to Brive through a lovely river valley shrouded in mist. Every village I passed through was a picture postcard. Chocolate box France through and though. Again I was forced to stop more often than I'd planned in ...
