Apollo Blue Palace Faliraki

Another beautiful day. Sunny 78 degrees on the island of Rhodes. We travel to Lindos half way down the island. To see the Acropolis were Paul spoke to the Greeks. A long climb to the top with a view to forever. Just outstanding. There's Medieval castles in Greece? Who knew! We stopped in Rhodes enroute from Fethiye to Santorini, and got to enjoy the day in Rhodes town before catching the overnight ferry out. What a difference a day makes. This place is absolutely beautiful. There are still lots of walls and castles that have been here for thousands of years, but it is nice and clean and friendly. We walked into the walled city and saw heaps more shops with locally made things and also lots of touristy rubbish, but no-one was hassling us to buy and we could just wander around looking and not fighting people off ...

... our day over it was time to catch our ferry to Athens. On our budget we chose the cheapest ticket available. Which means "Deck." But unfortunately for us what we didn't realise was that this means it is the only place on board were you can smoke. So the rest of the night with the lights on and us trying to get a nights sleep on our hard plastic benches, we breathed in the refreshing air of smoke. Shona has now got a smokers cough. <br><br>This is going to be a tough couple of days.

For two girls who were falling asleep on the bus there we did very well and ended up finishing at about 8am in the morning. Next we were onto Rhodes, one of the most historically significant Greek Isles. We saw the medieval old town, the Acropolis (yes, Rhodes has one too), and the site where the Colossus of Rhodes presumably stood in ancient times. We also got in a little beach time and visited a neat pottery factory.<br>

... level medieval stuff...all the goodies from murder holes, portcullises, real classic castle architecture but in a tropical setting which is fascinating. The knights were like a private equity shop: a group of 13 partners with a head called the "grand master" (note to PE people: this title is better than managing partner...recommend adoption immediately). They made money by dominating the seaways in this part of the med and the grand master's palace ...

... for "authentic Greece" that they will never be far away from the same facilities that they are used to back home and boastingly adds that "some 150 night clubs have been built in the last ten years alone". For those nice souls who enjoy killing animals whilst on holiday it claims that Rhodes is a "hunters paradise" and lists species that are perennial favourites before regretfully adding that some of these have become threatened and that if you want to hunt them you will need a licence ...
