Bye Bye Croatia

First port of call: Dubrovnik

... a candy store it was an all you can eat buffet ALL THE TIME. All I can eat turns out to be quite a lot but it is also quite uncomfortable. I don't skip meals on principle but I almost did on the ship. Every time I thought of the logistics of feeding thousands of people and keeping them entertained in a floating hotel it boggled my mind. The only thing it was missing was a basketball court which is probably a blessing because lots of ...

Perast is perfection!

... ketchup and mayonnaise
6. The wine was a surprise here -- the stuff we tried (Vrasac) was better than the touted wines in Croatia, but significantly cheaper. We tried to find a place that would sell us a case and ship it to the US, but we had no luck. A business opportunity?
7. The beer is excellent. In Bosnia we had Sarajevscko, in Croatia it was Karlovacko and Ozujsko, and here it was Niksicko. People here drink a lot of cappuccino and ...

In the air

... cyclist in town, so would have to survive future social situations without the novelty value! The Finnish guy was wearing a disturbingly tight all in one black lycra outfit, so before this awful sight permanently burned itself into my retina i headed off along the coast road into town. Dubrovnik didnt blow me away. It is simply another charming walled town (and I have seen lots of them this holiday!) but the locals were ...

A big catch up - Mostar and Dubrovnik

... nothing else to do. It had quite a unsafe feel with many ruined buildings - the battles scars are still very noticable. There also seemed to be dodgy looking men lurking artound all over the place. We quickly realised that we'd be better off catching another bus through to Dubrovnik but it was too late - the last bus had gone. Despite this setback we made the best of things and found a nice Italian restaurant where we had a cheap but massive ...

An incidental tour

... little passageways and trying to find a place to climb to the top of the wall without paying the $10 entry fee. For the most part we were unsuccessful, but we did get to see a small part of the top of the wall. Since it was the middle of Hannukah and I didn't want to miss out on latkes just because I wasn't at home, I decided to make them for dinner that night. I also needed to make applesauce since it isn't sold in the stores ...

Motoring Through Montenegro

... much as your first born child and were overnights. Right, all plans gone to ruins. With some very quick decision making, we got cash (crazy expensive tickets are cash only of course) got our tickets, ran back to the hostel, packed up, locked our bags at the bus station, and were dashing through the old town and up the steep, long climb to the hill top fortress which was the one very thing we wanted to do in Kotor. Phew! Ok, slowing down on the ...

LOOOONG travel to croatia

... great though. Arrived early morn. Rooms to let signs abound as each person pulled us to the side to show use their coloored photo binder with the room features. Illegal room letters yell to us from the outrside fence (asking to meet them after custooms). The legal room letters wait just after customs in the building. It ended you that the legal room letters had the better deal and of coarse organize, plus ...

Ferry down the Dalmatian Coast to Dubrovnik

... cold, damp mines. Way too long and after you have seen one statue or structure made of salt you kind of have the idea and you are ready to come up, or at least I was. The other side trip and the best reason to go to Krakow is the day trip I took to the Auschwitz and Birkenau concentration camps. When I decided to go I knew that it would be tough and horrifying but I was totally unprepared for how draining it would be. Auschwitz is the original camp and Birkenau was built afterwards to be ...

"Dubrovnik: The cat's meow, the city of King"

... gorgeous and a perfect day...bright sun, blue sky, sparkling water, and warm but not too hot. We hope that tomorrow will be nice again so that we can enjoy the scenery on the road from here to Split. I am really amazed at the amount of tourism here. The place is teeming with English speaking tourists, lots and lots of Germans, some French, and various other nationalities. Waitstaff in restaurants (minus the place last night) speak excellent English and seem to speak ...
