... max drove us to Mistletoe Bay where we joined the Queen Charlotte track which we would follow until we got back to Portage. Our walk took us about three and a half hours including a detour up Tereo Saddle trig point. It was amazing to walk along the ridge overlooking Queen Charlotte and Keneperu sounds. The track dipped and rose all the way along, we only passed a few people and one madman who decided to bike this section which can be incredibly steep at times and was tricky enough to ...

Marlborough Sounds

We drove up to Marlborough Sounds, near Picton, and decided to day hike part of the Queensland Track. We camped overnight at a DOC campground. The campsite was beautiful and we had our first experience with the flightless Weka. These birds are not afraid, and roam around, under, and even in our ...

Kaikoura (almost) and Picton

... NZ's largest wine producing area had, surprisingly, the smallest wine list we had ever seen. We had a pleasant dinner however, and made it back through the wind to the Beachcomber for a nightcap on the sheltered veranda overlooking the harbour where we watched the comings and goings of the ferries until bedtime. We are off to Nelson in the morning, for a couple of days, including we hope, a wine tour, before heading south, down the west coast, towards Franz Josef and the glaciers.

Tramping on the Queen Charlotte Track - 13/09/08

... were swimming alongside the boat. We arrived at Ship Cove at 10:40, which is where the Queen Charlotte Track starts. We had a look around the deserted cove, which is famous for being Captain Cook's favourite anchorage, while in NZ, staying a maximum of five times. A monument was proudly standing on the foreshore, commemorating Captain Cook's visits. We saw a couple of friendly Wekas, which are a native bird. They were unusually tame and seemed to enjoy following us around ...

... side, Thursdays he does the west side and Friday he does the outer reaches of the Sounds. Basically everyone gets a mail delivery once a week and the boat also carries tourists, passengers to the homesteads and goods from the shops for them. We set off from Havelock marina at 9.30 and the mist had all but lifted, leaving a warm morning and a gorgeous blue sky. We motored into the main arm of Pelorous Sound, diverting into coves and bays, where people would come out ...

Lots of rare and beautiful things.

... the night - the small town of Rapahoe just north of Greymouth on the West coast. We paid a visit to Paparoa National Park in Punakaiki, location of the strange Pancake Rocks and several blowholes. The thundering Surge Pool was quite impressive with the swell of the sea being amplified by the confined space and the water vapour "smoking" Chimney Pot was also pretty cool. We continued our journey towards Glacier country passing many beautiful lakes and creeks where the ...

Days 95-97 - Picton

... on a scenic drive to his home where the business (and boats) are. He took us along the Queen Charlotte drive which is a windy mountain road with beautiful views around every corner. He explained that this used to just be a track but people found out about it and a lot of tourists started coming so they sealed the road and it costs the council a lot of money to maintain it and keep it open today. He chatted to us all the way about all sorts of things: house prices, his family, how he ...
