Dodging Raindrops in Korcula

Korcula -- September 5

We woke up to something we haven't yet seen on the trip – rainclouds! The forecast called for rain, but we figured we’d get a jump start on some sightseeing before it started to rain. We went up to the tower for a view over the town of Korcula. A very picturesque and quaint place with atmospheric lanes and substantial walls. We stopped for a cappuccino and lingered for awhile as the skies looked like they were about to open up. Lots of lightning off i...

Leaving Split, Hello Korcula

Our last day in Spleet was pretty terrific. First we climbed up and around Mt. Marjan, which is the public park, no tourists, or very few. It is to the west of Diocletians Palace and is shabby and rundown and has a sad zoo and what at first appears to be vacant botanik gardens. But then a sleepy guy runs out of the house, cigarette dangling from lip, to hand you a map to the park and to take time to help you pick the best trails, with a lot of pointing and da, da. The views would have been sp...

Countin down the days in Korcula

Hello again all from our penultimate European destination! Well after an amazing 3 day stay in Hvar Town......Did I mention that everyone should go there??? We hit Korcula at the wrong time!! Apart from one restaurant, one shop and a couple of kids kicking around a footy, we were pretty much the local population!! Korcula itself, like Hvar is a gorgeous small town encased by medievil walls and I bet it is gorgeous when there is life present. Anyway, we decided to hire some bikes for the day a...

Sail Croatia - taking a dive

My girlfriend and I decided to travel around Italy and Croatia for six weeks in our uni holidays. We decided having a week sailing through through islands with a bunch of strangers would be the perfect way to break up the trip. We didn't realise what we were in for. We hopped on the boat in Split and nervously sat around having the initial small talk with the other 30 or so people on the boat. We were soon served lunch and things started to ...

Beauty, beaches, and bugs

... excited to see sun. We made ourselves breakfast on the patio. When we were sitting at the table, our “nana” brought us a pot of Turkish coffee. We’d been reading things here and there about Turkish coffee and had been planning on trying it in Istanbul. But since she made it for us, we got to try it sooner. It was really good. Of course we had to add milk to it though. It was really thick, almost a muddy texture, and really strong. <br ...

sail Croatia - Day # 5

... food took close to 45mins to arrive and sadly I was struck down with a stomach bug about 6hrs after eating... (and no, it wasn't the alcohol!!).
Sleeping in a cabin below with an ensuite and no ventilation -whilst feeling sick isn't something I'd recommend and illness only further added to the nasty state of our bathroom (or the swamp as it became know from now on...)

Not What I Expected

So yesterday our port was Dubrovnik, Croatia. Croatia was nothing what I expected it to be. I was expecting a war-torn town that honestly would be quite boring. It was actually a very beautiful town, with beaches and very green mountains...it was very nice. I went to the beach with Lucilia and Sarita. The beaches in Croatia are strange. They don't have sand! Instead it's all pebbles and stones...even ...

the austro-croat connection

An early morning catamaran from Vis Island brought me to Hvar island yesterday, a wee stopover before catching another boat to Korcula island. Hvar is likely the first Dalmatian Island the tourism touts will tell you about; but I found the town ridiculously blazing and overcrowded with Ibiza-bunnies.

After a boat and bus, finally arrived in Korcula town in the early ...

Island living

... then headed back to our place for wine (Pete), hair bleach (Tom) and chocolate gloop (no prizes). I don't think our host was thrilled about the hours we kept, but - good times. Played with a tiny tabby kitten in the street, photographed nests of crying baby swallows, watched huge yachts with plasma screen tvs glinting inside and middle-aged men in a cigar smoke haze outside.. kinda sad to move on when we dragged ourselves through the backpacked crowd onto a catamaran for the mainland.

Croatia v England in Euro 2004!

... after getting dropped off and we stayed in tier house - really weird as I was in tier daughters room (she was obviously sleeping elsewhere!) and she looked fecking stunning! (11K). Desperately trying to find a place for arguably the holidays biggest Euro 2004 game - CROATIA v ENGLAND in the group stages. We stumbled upon a balcony bar on the waterfront with big screens. 2 unbelievable barmaids were hampering our view of the game due to some ...
