... shortly thereafter we were joined by Wayne Lori and Mesfin. We all then got on the very busy N road and proceeded to this hotel which is right on the highway. Tomorrow is a huge day with 3100 metres of total climb and a total ride of 118 Kms. Either Caroline is going to get a lot of business, or some of us will not be getting to the hotel until very late. DAY 9/June 22: Oust to Luzenac

This was the big climb of the day, about 10 km at around an 8% average. Much of this climb was cut into the side of a valley with a number of switchbacks so the views were impressive including the always popular snowy peaks. Not so popular were the swarms of flies following us up.

... br> Not to be outdone, that road had a detour as well and I ended up outsmarting myself by ignoring it, since when I entered Luzenac feeling smug about having avoided all the traffic, I soon learned that I had to backtrack to reach our hotel, which was on the edge of town and right on the detour route I had avoided!

Indeed, this became the first day in which I had to dip into (and drain) my second water bottle, which was perhaps better than hauling its weight over every col as I had been doing.
