We were taken to the palace of the Prince-Bishop. It remined me of a smaller version of Catherine's palace in St. Petersburg, where one room flows into the next, each one more oppulent.
The temperature is in the 40's and windy. Prior to our trip all sources indicated it would be in the 50's and 60's. Oh well.
Last night there was dancing to the music of Sasha- a Bavarian born, one man band who's English sounds like one run on sentence ...
At Bamberg we left the Danube-Main Canal. The canal was completed in 1992 and allows ships to travel from the North Sea to the Black Sea. This connection had been dreamed of since Charlemagne tried digging one in the 8th century. Another attempt was made in the 1800s but the advent of the railroad doomed it. It took 20th century technology to make it possible. The canal itself has 34 locks out of the total of ...
Würzburg, Bavaria, Germany tucsonjohnThe fourth biggest city in Germany, with over one million inhabitants, Cologne (Köln in German) began life as a Roman colony or colonia (hence its name). Its location on the Rhine, at the heart of Germania, was key to its status as capital of the province. The city became a centre for worship, famous for the legend and cult of Santa Ursula, and built several splendid Romanesque churches, which survive today.
By the Middle Ages, Cologne was one of ...
... on in German, so we quietly leave the room.
We get the guides and begin the tour of the castle. The first rooms are about the war and what happened in this area. Most buildings were bombed and then fire bombed so a lot of the town was destroyed. Then it went on to describe the rebuilding of the town and then Germany as a whole. It wasn't quite what we had expected as we thought we would be seeing the rooms ...
... been there longer, so I understand why we were hurried. I am glad we took the tour, though, because it gave us a better understanding of how life really was at Dachau for the prisoners. It's a pretty important thing to understand, I think.
It's still difficult to comprehend, though, that something like that could happen. Kevin compared it to Guantanamo Bay, and in a way, he had a good point about some of the similarities. I won't go through his whole argument, but ...
From Alices Diary
" The day started of nice and relaxed. We didn't have breakfast until 8.30am, caught up on some washing and sat up on the deck to watch the world go by. The weather is starting to pick up and we are leaving the rain behind. At 10.30am happy hour was announced and we went down to the lounge to enjoy smoked sausages with beer and wine and so an hour later everyone was very happy ...
Our visit in Regensburg ends today and it's much to my dismay. I'm really going to miss the Beiber/Kliegel family and already look forward to our return here. We start our final road trip to Amsterdam and plan a few stops along the way. One of those stops being in Wurzberg for lunch. Arriving in Wurzburg we find a very quaint cafe to eat lunch that overlooks the Main and the Wurzburg Castle. Once again, we determined that we should ...

Wurzburg, Germany 2bikersWe woke up early in Wurzburg to go see the famous prince-bishop's Residenz, the Marienberg Fortress, and enjoy some wine. The city is the first stop on the tourist-friendly "Romantic Road" and features more quaint, medieval architecture. The Residenz became famous when the red-haired Emperor Frederick Barbossa came to ask the bishop of Wurzburg for approval to divorce his wife (after other bishops ...
Wurzburg, Bavaria, Germany tsbgoblue... In Lohr, the river Lohr empties into the Main.Perhaps for its geographical location or the fact that two majorvalleys lead into the interior of the range, the town is known as the"Gateway to the Spessart".
The Main river valley is steep with an elevation change from 160 m above sea level at Gemünden dropping to ...
