A Bliss of Bends

It was a bliss of bends as we headed west along the north coast, passing Bilbao and Santander on the way while sticking to the back roads as much as possible. The destination for today was Comillas, a unique spot as it is one of the very few outside Barcelona where Gaudi has designed some architecture. The sunflower palace (my name for it, not Gaudi's) was impressive! I would like to live in a house like that: grand, artistic, and a little pretentious, it ...

... with tight timing sailing solo, I should have/could have prepared the genoa before left just in case! Finally I had to let the main flap and getting wet on foredeck while getting smashed by the 2 meter waves, another great lesson learned in the hard way. It was a great relief after the genoa up then we started broad reaching through the side waves flying at 7 knots, Quadrophenia was happily battling the ...

We went across the one made out of planks, just for fun. When we ...

... trip and we got pretty good seats which was great because the drive was pretty stunning. Again, not what you really think of as Spanish country side but we basically drove right through green valleys with amazing mountains, sheer cliffs and various small villages tucked into the hills the whole way. Alright!

We got into Oviedo and walked the 10 very hot minutes to our accommodation for the two nights we were there. It turned out the place we were staying was a ...

A very pleasant surprise

We spent a few days in Gijon which was a very interesting town, with a wonderful atmosphere and great cultural activities. We just happened to be there whilst a cultural festival was going on. Each evening there was a concert by the marina, which displayed the various styles of music of the (Asturian) region.

The town itself was fairly modern, with a few hidden gems.

A most pleasant stay.
