Island Paradise to Military lockdown

... to be happy for them!

Drinking

The night life on the little island of Utila revolves around three bars – Coco Loco on the water front; Tranquilo next door to Cocos and Treetantic up the slope and on Wednesday and Friday nights extents to Bar in the Bush, which I only managed to get to once. Treetantic was definitely a favourite. The bar is set on a circular platform surrounding a huge tree and is covered in mosaics and glass beads all ...

Tegucigalpan Taxi Trauma

... like an old dark parking deck. When a bus pulls in, the diesel engine just echos against the dirty concrete walls and the thick exhaust is aimed right at the waiting room with its bright green 70's chairs scattered about dirty black and grey tiles. A loudspeaker announces something that sounds like the teacher from The Peanuts. It sounds like wha, wha, wha, wha, Guatewhawha, el bus wha, wha. Luckily someone came and rounded up the Tegucigalpa bound ...

... a taxi waiting outside.

All of a sudden after standing there for about 8 minutes, he uncrossed his arms, let out a dramatic sigh, and sat down at the computer. Within minutes I was on my way with tickets. Was he on some kind of break or what? We had just stared at each other until he decided the appropriate amount of time had passed. It was time to move on to take in more of the city and boy did I manage to get an eyeful along the pedestrian ...

... most famous monument, the Great Hieroglyph stairway which bears the longest inscription ever discovered in the Maya kingdom. Yax Pac and U Cit Tok were the last rulers of Copan's dynasty around 822 before it was abandoned and reclaimed by the jungle. Tegucigalpa via Campimento and Valle de Angeles

... and so we set off in a southerly direction to get to the airport. Basically by keeping south we managed to get through the town very easily, even though we never saw one road name or direction sign, passed the airport and found the ring road. As expected we found we were going the wrong way but again found the Immigration Office very quickly. Once inside we managed to get the paperwork we needed within 20 minutes and so filled it in, got the payment ...

... do with the fact that there was a power cut on Tuesday evening, which meant that the fan above my bed was out of action, which subsequently meant that any minute that should have been spent in slumber was instead spent lying wide awake sweating my bollocks off. It was due to this lack of sleep that I missed the early 6:20 departure to the mainland, which meant that it would now be impossible to reach La Ceiba in time to catch one of the long distance buses to Tegucigalpa. So ...

However, Don Julio and Donna Theresa, the couple I am staying with, live right downstairs and are taking good care of us, as well as all our friends from church. Best, Andrew and Stacey

How Bout Some Espanol

So Stacey has a gift for this whole Spanish thing. She is picking it up like crazy. She can understand conversations, she can respond well and I think she even has cracked a few jokes. Andrew on the otherhand is coming along very slowly. I think I just need to be confident and try. Today will be our first day of tutoring. We are going five days a week for two hours a day.
