Cijelo selo smrce bijelo

... Hope it at least made you smile! Many things made me smile this past weekend. For example, Friday (June 26), all the schools we shut down because the main water line to the city burst. The water main was right below a very busy street, so needless to say, there was a lot of traffic. I didn't get to the University until 45 minutes after my class was supposed to start - luckily classes had been cancelled because there was no water in the ...

¨So we´ll wake up at 7:30, and leave by 8¨

... took a bus from Santiago at Pajaritos metro station to Viña. There were departures leaving about every 5 min on different companies, and Pullman was the next one leaving so we went with them.

Upon arrival at the bus terminal in Viña del Mar, we stopped by a fruit market, a supermarket, and a flea market along the very long walk to the coast, greeted by the view of an azul Pacific Ocean and getting separated from Hiyasmin and Andy along the way. The ...

Valparaiso (& Viña del Mar)

... of being by the seaside. I settled into my lovely hostel which felt incredibly homely (probably because it was being run by a family). The lady/mother who ran the place couldn't speak a word of English and although my Spanish is extremely limited we maneged to communicate just fine. Over the next couple of days I walked through both cities and ascended several funiculars, which are steeply inclined tram carts that take people up to the top of the numerous cerros (hills ...

Foiled - Ben's kidnapping!!!

... into a heavenly-smelling empanada shop (fresh from the oven!) I came back with a couple of cheese and pino (egg, ground beef, olives, onion) empanadas. A big improvement over my earlier, non-existent breakfast! Ben complained about bugs nibbling on him last night. I would've hated that, but would've appreciated Liszett nibbling on me ... oh Liszett ... this hotel is so perfect ... After we finished up the empanadas, it was off to Vina del ...

A gong show for Wong

... double checked with the ticket agent that my ticket was in fact correct, and that I would arrive in Valpo on time. I didn't want a repeat of today's earlier fiasco! She confirmed everything, so I was able to breathe a sigh of relief. I went outside to catch my breath, and got a few Chino stares. One vendor started talking to me and was shocked that I spoke Spanish, and regarded me as a bit of a novelty. I made a mental note that I have yet to find a ...

The homestretch, not really different

... It was pretty fun/interesting to dance with people 2 or 3 times my age but I think we all had a good time. Before I knew it, it was 7am and I didn't get home and asleep until 8am was on its way. Mike called me 2 hours later to see if I was ready to go to Valpo. I said no and we left at 2pm instead... Fast forward 18 hours: So after the concert we met up with my Chilean friends who also came and then the IES group and we went to a jazz club. The jazz was pretty terrible ...

Made it to Valparaíso

... back up the hill to my place is a nice little 15 minute walk. Doing it twice today will be good exercise. The hills, especially Concepción and Alegre and known for their brightly colored buildings. Both hills are really good place just to walk around and go in whichever direction looks most interesting.

Final Countdown

... Vina del Mar and Valparaiso, seeing a movie, drinking some wine and pisco sours, and generally just acting like we were on vacation. On her last night, we went out in the most "happening" area of town, Barrio Bellavista, and heard a pretty awesome singer who I would classify as the Spanish version of Jack Johnson. I continued with the next round of goodbyes when I saw her off at the train station; she will finish out the semester in Concepcion ...

One of the loveliest places on Earth

... assuming typical South American gay standards meant not advertising. I stupidly walked in on the people who ran the club setting up for later. I felt like an idiot and said I would come back later. I hightailed it to my internet cafe and spent an hour there, then walked around for a bit. I ended up meeting a cute Chilean boy named Ronaldo at a Pizza Hut of all places, but he had to meet his sister and thus couldn't come out. Still, I was impressed at how easy it was ...
