Freising, Bavaria, Germany marinaalekseevaIn Europe, there is a holiday called Saint Martin's. The story is that Martin was a monk and during a snowstorm he cut his coat in half and gave part of it to a beggar. So the holiday is about sharing. To celebrate, kids decorate lanterns then march around (we marched around a small lake in Munich) and they sing lantern songs then finish by receiving a pastry goose that they break apart and share with their ...
Munich, Bavaria, Germany kthuman(61 miles) Today, we rode a little too hard and realized that we probably need to slow down a bit. Its kinda the tortoise and the hare bit. We mostly rode today not a whole lot of sight seeing. Chrissy hit some gravel today and fell of her bike skinning her knee. Also we saw a lady on a bike get hit by a car. I guess it's just one of those days? After our long day we showed up at the less expensive very welcoming canoe/camping place.
Blaibach, Bavaria, Germany randyandchrissy... the sudden hill. Next was a long run towards a very prominent hill with a church on top. The hills are getting a bit closer too. Straubing looked great but was the victim of a shortcut. Progress was so good that I decided to press on and make the most distance possible in the sun. Lunch was in a bus shelter; very handy shelter. The path was basically on or by the dyke so tended to be flat if oddly signposted in a couple of places. It was a fairly normal day but with lots of people ...
waltendorf, bavaria, Germany i_could_walk... was a lot of fun; again, plenty to see and do. We found a cinema that played movies in English, so we went to the flicks one night. Even found a shop that sold air guns in all shapes and sizes. There were replicas of everything from revolvers and semi-autos all the way up to a sniper rifle. We caught a bus tour to Roz's favourite part of the trip; King Ludwigs castles.
Munich, Bavaria, Germany danandroz... town (50k ppl) and worth a visit. We bought some little knives, tweezers etc from a stall in the market - it had some really great knives that I am not sure we'd get back through customs! We bought some cold stff for dinner and a candle and had a candlelight dinner in the hotel room - how romantic am I heh?
Straubing, Germany nlevac... at my school have said very hateful comments about other cultures and races. Obviously, this is very bothersome. But what also gets to me is the hypocrisy that follows. This view that Americans are close minded and not open to other cultures is not in any way justified. Especially when compared to the amount of prejudice I have experienced here. I am, by no means, saying that America is free of hate and prejudice. I'm sure we have just as much as any ...
Regensburg, Germany hannahb... drove all of Monday and Tuesday, I decided it was my turn to step up to the plate and drive us into Germany to see Daschau. German drivers go crazy fast. Our little car would top out at about 140 kmh, after that a little warning light and beep would go off. But we routinely would get passed by cars that made us feel like we were standing still, so I guess they were doing 100 to 120 mph. You have to be very careful when switching lanes, what looks clear may not be a few ...
