    ... probably built to reflect the shape of the garden. The odd thing though, was that the building itself was the attraction and there wasn't much art in it. The coffee shop was stark white and also an attraction in itself, with glass walls facing out to the garden. Clare and I sat down there for awhile while Damien looked at some other rooms in the museum and I enjoyed an Assam tea while Clare had a parfait and iced tea.

    We boarded a bus for the Kenrokeun Garden and the Castle Park.

    Our guide, Yama, was very funny and informative. She explained that people from Tokyo insult the western side of Japan by saying it is the backside of the island. She said that because this is the side closer to Korea and China, it has more culture.

    ... only four people are on walking paths between, very surreal. The gate is huge three stories high, ten metres deep and fifty metres across. It is made of stone and iron bound wood. It was finished in 2010 after a fire in 1772 and demolition in 1880.     In Shirakawa, the government chose 26 of the best preserved homes and structures and created an open-air museum, where we can step inside. Each has 3 floors with the first floor being the living area and the top two used for raising silk worms.     Along the streets we see little round silver disks that are in the center of every street. We find out that since it snows in the region and the accumulation is quite significant, the disks will shoot warm water into the snow to help speed up melting.
