    ... The next day we went to the Ninja Temple, so called not because of any ninjas but because there are dozens of traps and secret passage ways. It's over 350 years old, totally fascinating and a wonder of creative architecture. Turns out the lord might have been a bit paranoid as the traps were never needed. Better safe than sorry I guess.     ... My calculation would suggest their gold leaves are at least 5 times thinner than the Burmese ones. The highlight of the afternoon tour would be a visit to an establishment ran by a geisha. She was beautifully dressed and speaks passable English. We had a tour of the place and an introduction to entertainment by geishas. There is a VIP tearoom where the tatami is covered with gold leaf!

    ... no way to get to this village. We had lunch there and then drove 1hr to Kanazawa where will stay the night. Walked to a Shinto shrine & to the Castle, Annette, Nat & myself sat overlooking a beautiful garden while the boys climbed the steps to the castle.     ... is pleasing. The mountaintops all have snow but none in the village. Before getting on a public highway bus to Shirakawago, we walked the Takayama morning market. The morning market had lots of street food, crafts and preserved food on one side and a farmers' market on the other side of the street.
