We walked through the first courtyard over lovely marble arched bridges. The Inner Golden River flows beneath the bridges. The central bridge was used exclusively by the emperor, while the two flanking ...

Once past the marble boat, the crowds thin even more. We headed around the north end of the lake to the "Western Causeway"… a thin strip of willow-, crabapple- and mulberry-lined walkway through the outer western edge of the lake. This made for a rather pleasant and peaceful walk. ...

... West Train Station. We really enjoyed the Beijing Downtown Backpackers Hostel, the staff were great, the beers were cheap, the location unbeatable (especially when the new subway station they are building two hundred yards away is opened), the rooms were brilliant and the tours exceptional. As a first hostel experience, we couldn’t ask for more, and if the hostels yet to come are halfway as good as this one then we will be laughing!
