In the Forbidden City we felt a bit rushed, partly due to having a long explanation by Phyllis before we could start walking through the buildings and courtyards. A lot of the buildings are out of bounds to tourists anyway, so we could only explore the central core.
We walked through the first courtyard over lovely marble arched bridges. The Inner Golden River flows beneath the bridges. The central bridge was used exclusively by the emperor, while the two flanking ...
... only non Chinese people on the plane and a breakfast of beef in oyster sauce and rice at 10am.. Also my travel partner slept for 6 of the 7 hour flight- great conversation!! The first massive culture shock was sitting in the departure lounge in Dubai, this is where we saw a few things that at 2am sent us in to delirious fits of laughter and asking ourselves what we have let ourselves in for! As the people started filling the seats around us we saw ...
... UK banned smoking in public places in 2007, Wikipedia is great. The Chinese do not stand on ceremony when they eat and there is far too much food, we decide you are not meant to finish the food as nobody else has. Four dishes and three beers costs £13, bargain!
We get back to our hotel and our clothes and hair stink of smoke, we reminisce about when this used to happen in the UK, coming back from the ...
... through several puppet emperors, sitting on a smaller throne behind the big one, behind a yellow fabric sheet. Literally the "Power behind the throne.")
Once past the marble boat, the crowds thin even more. We headed around the north end of the lake to the "Western Causeway"… a thin strip of willow-, crabapple- and mulberry-lined walkway through the outer western edge of the lake. This made for a rather pleasant and peaceful walk. ...
... West Train Station. We really enjoyed the Beijing Downtown Backpackers Hostel, the staff were great, the beers were cheap, the location unbeatable (especially when the new subway station they are building two hundred yards away is opened), the rooms were brilliant and the tours exceptional. As a first hostel experience, we couldn’t ask for more, and if the hostels yet to come are halfway as good as this one then we will be laughing!
