agean sea, the place to be

so from selcuk i headed to a town called Assos (actually, it's called Behramkale, Assos is its greek name). assos is on the northern part of turkey's agean coast: the greek island of lesvos (which i think is lesbos) take up a lot of the sea-view. the name of the state it's in, Çannakale (also the name of the small city i'm sitting in now) is the turkish name for the Dardanelles. people were surprised that i was going to assos: while it's definately a tourist destination (when you enter the to...

War is horrible

Beck: Well, we've done what every Aussie in Turkey must do: visit Gallipoli. Although the Turkish name ıs actually Gellibolu. We watched a documentary about it last night in Selçuk and that was really depressing and revolting. Seeing the actual battle area today was really weird - kınd of like seeing a movie set or a place from a novel, except of course everything has changed a lot. The vegetation has all grown back, the trenches have caved in or shallowed out, or had new wood put in them to ...

a trip to Gallipoli

I got up about 5.30am and had a quick shower then went around the corner to the Hassle Free office to get picked up by the coach. We drove around for a bit picking up other passengers then made our way out of town. Its so clean and organised here - the tulips are in bloom and they're planted neatly and colour coded along the side of the road... I slept for a bit on the bus then we stopped for brekky at a roadhouse along the side of the road where i had some soup.... more sleeping we eventuall...

Gallipoli and Troy

The circuit of Turkey had one last stop, a visit to Chanakkale, the gateway to Gallipoli and Troy, where two major battles were fought. As in all battles, there were reasons and then there were the reasons for war. First, I went to Troy, where the imagination was needed to picture the Homeric epic, as the ruins from that era were sparse and in poor shape. A couple citadel walls were left to see. As Troy occurs in at least ten different layers piled on top of one another, interpretation was di...

Canakkale

Well our main aim in Canakkale was to go out to the gallipoli peninsula and pay our respects and check out the landscape and memorials for ourselves. We took a ferry and a van over there and spent the day going from anzac cove , up the hill all the way to chunnick bair, stopping at memorials along the way and the trenches which although filled in a bit are still there in a lot of places. It was moving to think of the bravery of our boys, only to fail and sad to think that they formed a bond w...

Gallipoli and Troy

Our journey began with Hassle Free Tours picking us up from our hotel. We hopped on the mini-bus with all the other travellers. There were many Aussies and Kiwis as well as a couple of Canadians and English. We got talking to 2 older ladies from Hervey Bay, QLD who were very funny. They had a story for everything and had travelled extensively. Wherever in the world there was a disaster, they would shortly follow to get a good travel bargain. So they'd been to Bali, USA, Kenya, and Egypt etc M...

TURKEY TOURISM(pamukkale-canakkale-kapadokya)

... As the devastating 1999 earthquakes illustrated, Turkey is caught between the insistent pressure exerted from the Asian and European continental plates. The Erciyes Mountain, Melendiz Mountain, and Hasandag — all dormant or extinct volcanoes — are the result of underground forces that thrust these landmasses above water level eons ago. Recurrent volcanic eruptions blanketed the area with boulders, ash, and lava, over time creating layers of ...

Gallipoli: A tough place to visit

... to come himself and already stressed out (not an easy job guiding when you don't know the language). For me though, what really put me off was that she had grown up in the States, lived in the States, but liked to pretend she was from somewhere else, I don't know where. She asked me if I was travelling because I had just finished "Uni." "Yes, I did recently finish COLLEGE," I replied. You aren't British...you don't need to pretend you are. Hayden was not sad to ...

25 April 1915 - A Day to Remember

Our first bus was a great experience... this backpacking thing is easy. Comfy seats, the whole back row to ourselves (yes, T is even now reading and watching movies - too easy) and free water, coffee, chocolate treats and now and then Fanta. It certainly is a joy to travel by local transport in Turkey. We're not holding our hope too high though, this was only one bus :-) We were lucky enough that the only tout in Canakkale was the owner of the place we'd earmarked to stay ...

Gallipoli - pre-Anzac Day

... special. Had a great tour guide for the trip - Bulent (who has a full page interview in the latest Lonely Planet), however the weather was rubbish: freezing, rainy and windy. Departed first thing the next morning back to Istanbul to meet up with the rest of our tour, however not before witnessing the Turks starting their celebrations for Anzac Day (which is a national holiday there as well). Next stop: Istanbul, again.
