Barb and Alex had a personal mission to visit Isernia in the Molise Province so we headed off to explore the interior of Italy. Isernia was small and definitely not a tourist location so we were able to experience a true siesta afternoon where nothing, I mean nothing was open, had the best Italian meal in all of our travels, struggled with the language as no one new English, wandered through all the small streets and just had a nice day.
Molise, Italy travelmenu... By the time we got to the airport I already had a hang over, feeling thirsty and dizzy, topped off with a pounding headache. But what the hell, it was our last day off so we might as well enjoy it....or suffer it. We slept the entire flight, train ride and tube ride back home, where we showered and jumped into bed, depressed at the prospect of returning to our boring jobs, but ever so grateful for a new traveling experience
Lanciano, Italy zento... in a bakery to buy bread for lunch. I wasn't going to go inside but Giovanni motioned me to follow him in the shop and I soon understood why: the smell of warm home made bread was almost intoxicating. None of that plain white squared bread but rather irregularly shaped and thick, bubbly and coarse; what bread should be without the chemicals they put in it to make it soft and white. What we noticed were that every 5 ...
Atessa, Italy zento... impressed: unkempt buildings and houses, rusty train tracks, dirty streets and old shops. I was waiting for the magic that I had read about, the old center of the city, the 5 million years of stories, the vestiges of old pagans and the modern flair of Christianity. I'm sure they were hiding behind the modern cement, bricks and pavements.....and I was sure to find them sooner or later. So we got to Adriano's ...
Lanciano, Italy zento... at the post office for a map of the two towns... The guy behind the window could not find anything so he picked up the phone. A minute later, to my surprise, he told us to return to the office where we had just made the copies and the guard would give us a map. No worries, we were soon back in Capradosso. Unfortunately, even though there are only three or four roads in the town, the names are different now than they were 100 years ...
Pescara, Italy rbartorillo... it really wasnt that difficult at all. After the close to 3 and a half hour journey we arrived at Ancona and were just wondering where our hotel was when across the street from the main entrance of the train station was Hotel Fortuna, our hotel. We wandered in, and the guy checked us in, told us about the ferry situation for the morning, and the two other details we needed. One, where to eat lunch, which is a restaurant 3 doors down from our hotel, and the other was when asked what ...
Ancona, Italy matthewjcohen... farm house that are set in the city have been constructed with marble and column stripped from the ruins. A review- La Citta' Romana di Saepinum Shilo's thoughts- This sight is proof positive the Italians are the world's best recyclers. Coming from the slash and burn mentality of North America, it's wonderful to see this sight, in the middle of farm fields, completely in tacked because it could be used. And if it wasn't of use for anyone at a ...
Parco National Abruzzo, Saepinum, and the coast, Italy shiandgabe... other side of Italy at 9am! Lots more phone calls ensued, trying to get us on another ferry that night but ultimately it was Easter Sunday and there just wasn't room on any ferry for 37 people. So we had to spend another night in Italy and travel on the ferry the next night. We could've travelled in the morning but that mean all day on a ferry, arriving in Greece in the late afternoon with nowhere to stay as we couldn't sail at night anyhow. All this meant we would lose a day of ...
Pescara, Italy tokyo_cateWe had a long journey ahead of us as we left Rome, on a train bound for the city of Bari, on the eastern coast of Italy, where our Blue Star Ferry would take us across the Adriatic Sea to the city of Patras, on the Pelopenese. When we arrived at the port, we were starving, so Bry went out into town in search of some food. I waited and waited, and soon started to worry that he would not be coming back. After a couple of hours he did indeed come back, with a large pizza ...
Bari, Italy krissy... World War II. The town decided instead of a typical monument the kept a ruin up, It is only a shell of a building. I think it speaks volumns of the devastation of the town. It was very emotional while walking thru the cementary. The gravestones had the soldiers names and what regiment they were in. but the hard part was the age , when ...
