... From here we took a lift up to the very pretty old city of Taormina. This little town perched high on the hill has been a coastal resort town since Roman times. We walked the cobbled streets of balconied terrace houses and shops. Many of the balconies contained examples of the unique ceramics the town is renowned for. The shops were exquisite and and I know several people who would LOVE to put in a day or two perusing! The fashions ...

Nicolosi to Taormina fine and Warmish

A travel blog entry by kenb on Nov 22, 2014

... Taormina, and public car park cost 18€ a day. The town is spectacular, perched on a cliff 200mtrs above sea level. Full tourist town, with boutiques and restaurants lining the main drag, and little hotels and bnb's everywhere. Mainly Italian tourists, and plenty of them. Found our bnb easily enough- on the main duomo square. Typical old apartment converted to rooms, but this one has a communal kitchen. Called BNB 4 ...

      Mt Etna

... top of a cable car system that isn't working, then climbed the remainder. Hard work in the thinner atmosphere but rewarding. Will feel it in the thighs tomorrow. Very desolate landscape- just black lava from the last major eruption in 2007 and snow. No vegetation or wildlife. We hired a car to drive around Sicily (Sicilia to us locals), and the driving can be pretty harrowing at times, with totally unpredictable local drivers, tiny 1 car width roads, and the absence of street ...

Licata to Nicolosi Warm sunny 21 deg

A travel blog entry by kenb on Nov 20, 2014

Cool wind in piazza for breakfast - tea, corneto, yoghurt and pastries. Left Licata around 10 and headed to Outlet Centre near Enna- about 1 1/2 hrs and 130km. Followed road along coast toward Gella- fabulous scenery over Med- then headed inland on major 2 lane highway- 100kph on road mainly built up on pylons- sometimes 100mtrs high. Good road but crazy overtaking manoeuvres. Outlet mall seemed a carbon copy of those in States in ...

      Taormina, the toast of Sicily

Taormina was everything and more than we expected. This small community about an hour north of Catania on the east coast of Sicily has great views of snow-capped Mount Etna. Our accomodations at the Villa Ducale Hotel were first class. The town was fun to stroll in. The public gardens were beautiful. The ...
