The way I related this to my prior knowledge was connecting it to the pyramids of Ancient Egypt. The museum and the tombs were one of the most interesting parts of the trip. We visited the ancient city of Philippi which was our first site with ruins in Greece. Saint Paul visited here during his ministry in 49 or 50 A.D. and was put in jail here for a time. Within the city we visited different excavations, including the Forum, the Philippian jail and the Egnatian Way. We saw one archaeological site there that has tombs and beautiful mosaic flooring overtop of the dig site. On one portion of the mosaic flooring Paul's name is written in ancient Greek, ...

Baptistry of St. Lydia

At Phillipi, we visited a baptistry that is believed to correspond with the river that St. Lydia was baptized in (according to Greek Orthodox tradition). There was a small shrine near the baptistry honoring Lydia.

The inside of the baptistry was ornate and had mosaics and wall paintings. We sang "Sing Me to Heaven" in a circular formation, and it was very interesting to hear the echo of the sound go through the roughly round building.

 Our first day in Greece began with a trip to the ancient city of Philippi. This site was quite different from that of Ephesus because it was still in its recovered state as opposed to in Espeus where things are recovered and built up to what it was imagined to be. Philippi had be destroyed by an earthquake which ruined many of the great structures. ... amazing…at least the men did. The women have seemed to be struggling when the song first and dropping the pitch what felt like a whole step. With Samantha not being able to sing, the sopranos simply seemed to be struggling. The recording did get better the longer we sang the song.
