... communist revolution of 1923 with the occupation by the Red Army at the end of the Second World War. The monument is still standing and maintained and still draws crowds of visitors.

After the three day walk we spent a day or two in Koprivshtitsa, another mountain resort, famous because it is very difficult to pronounce. Many of the houses are restored as museums. Down in the valley is the town of Hisar ...

Did this a couple of years ago on a road trip with my friend Pat, it was falling down then.....3 years later a bit more of it has fallen down!
Entry was a tad more difficult this year, the hole was a bit higher.....

Again my mind pondered on the concept of "nation", “state”, “country” and potentially how negative the consequences of our separation is.

Back to Veliko Tarnovo or shall I call it Bulgarian Durham due to the wonderful Yantra River which meanders brilliantly around the city centre in quite a unique way.

Perhaps it does not have a stunning cathedral but the panorama more ...

... to the Ivanovo Rock Monastery, a 14th century sanctuary which was cut into cliffs adorned with fantastic frescos. The views of the valley below were brilliant and gave my vertigo a test. I seem to manage quite well though.

Apparently, it's all about speaking to your inner child! What a good call that was.

... is right in the city. We are now in Sozopol, a beachside resort on the Black Sea and a holiday destination for Bulgarians. Our first surprise is the price of everything. The first day we had some lunch while waiting to check into our hotel and we were surprised to find very tasty three course lunches for 6 lev, that's about $4.20. As for the beer and beer prices, Gallagher really is in heaven now! Zagorka beer is one of the local brews and it is very tasty! Four 500ml glasses cost ...
