Stefan gave us a tour of the monastery, starting with the museum. The most treasured item in the museum is a wooden cross that was intricately and painstakingly carved by a monk over a period of 12 years. He lost his sight after he finished the project. In the 1960s when Bulgaria defaulted, the Soviets came in and took every valuable thing they could find from the monastery as part of payback. ...

... we have been on this trip we have of course eaten out a lot and mostly the food has been very good. Today was one of our best meals (crispy pork on fresh pasta and chicken, stuffed with cheese and peppers, and wrapped in bacon), just excellent food and for the princely sum of 15 E including beer and coffee.... hard to beat.

Veliko Tarnovo is a really nice town and I'm glad we came. It's a university town with a lot of culture and reminded us a bit of Durham.

The time in Istanbul and Edirne was the final stage of our Turkey adventure. While in Istanbul we did some of the usual touristy things. We caught ferries up and down the Bosphorus, the Golden Horn and the Sea of Marmara; we spent some time shopping in the Grand Bazaar and surrounding districts (OK, a lot of time shopping. The final count was ten leather jackets between us: four for Janice, five for Pam and one for me but only because leather jackets and Townsville don't mix that ...

... didn't bring anything for Sam but wanted to give him some money to buy something to remember Bulgaria...I didn't know this at the time but she gave him 100 lev (approx. $60) which is a lot of money for her. We took some pictures and then she got on our blue bus and we gave her a ride to work but dropped her a couple blocks away so no one from her village saw us.
