Siam Reap, Cambodia

30th Dec Today we had a 7 hour bus journey to Siam Reap, through very similar villages to Laos, houses on stilts, rice paddies for miles, dogs, cats, chickens, buffalo, dust and dirt everywhere, kids playing on haystacks, trucks & vans chocked full of people. Love it!!!! Checked into hotel and jumped into a tuk-tuk to go and explore the small town of Siam Reap. Awesome little town, small with lots of backpacker bars mixed with some really nice places and also traditional Khmer food stalls...

Lara Croft has nothing on me...

We flew into Siem Reap yesterday about noon, 45 minutes- piece of cake, judging from the scenery I think it would've taken a week to attempt to drive it. Siem Reap exists for the soul purpose of housing and feeding the kazillions of tourists who come to see Angkor Wat. Luckily it is the off season now and is the best time to come since the crowds are so low (yippee) The hotel has a pool, so that's where you found our little posse yesterday until dinner- hey more amok! And the introduction to ...

Siem Reap and the temples of Angkor

We took off on our long drive to Siem Reap and the roads deteriorated very quickly. I felt like I was back in Bolivia. Our teeth rattled and our ***** went numb. We stopped a few times along the way, including one stop where a bunch of kids descended on us to sell stuff and a young guy put a tarantula on my head, nice. Some of the girls freaked out, still, it was a cool photo. Siem Reap is home to the temples of Angkor and the most famous in this grouping Angkor Wat. The city and temple comple...

Tumbling down temples and floating villages

... after spending sometime there already. So despite our tuk tuk drivers insistence to stay at his desired hostel (they all make commissions from taking us to certain places) we had to become pretty firm when he stopped there and even got the security guard to join in on trying to persuade us to stay there we eventually got away and found the place by the night markets that had been recommended not by someone not trying to make money out of us.
We had a much needed sleep in on our ...

(Almost) Everything about making silk

... we usually associate with silk and that makes pure or fine silk. The cacoons are boiled and the silk is litterally unwound and collected. It is then spun into threads of varying thickness. These threads are dyed and then woven into fabric. Tie dying techniques are used on the thread to generate intricate designs. The workshop employs locals and produces some of the nicer silks we saw.
When I asked him why he said because there were no farmers in the area (maybe because of land mines...i don't know).

I got in the car with Mr. Heng and off we went..but not before stopping so some lady could throw a bag of broken bricks and a loop of wire in the front seat (we later dropped them off in Sisophon with his friend). Cambodia: The Dollar Store

... the US currency as a means to make more, and it's funny because they try to sell everything for a dollar starting. You can get a large bottle of water down to 25 cents, and you get their currency, the Riel, back... about 1000 riel is 25 cents. It is often useless when trying to buy things here, and it's exchange is terrible. After dealing with the currency matters and getting over it, I managed to find a friendly guest house for about 8 bucks a ...

Well, don't expect too much of the food. The main interest was the Apsara dance.

After dinner, we were driven back to our guesthouse.
