Siem Reap, the second largest city in Cambodia, because it's next to Angkor Wat, one of the wonders of the world. The city itself is quite nice, relaxed with some good restaurants, and some nice people. The first day we arrived about 6pm, and spent ages trying to find somewhere to stay, and eventually plumped for the Sydney Angkor Hotel, which is OK once we bargained the price down a bit. The next morning we hired bicycles and set off for all the temples, about 6K from the city, some of them ...
Siem Reap, Cambodia alanjaquesHi! Bit behind on the photo's so thought we'd try upload some more, these are ones just after Laos, travelling through Cambodia, the capital Phnom Penh, and Siem Reap. Looks like we forgot to take many photo's here, but there's lots of posing next to various ancient temples of Angkor, and a couple of lovely monkey snaps too... Heading out of Laos PDR, the bus to border was nice and straightforward, and the border land crossing went rather smooth, after a couple of ex gratia 'weekend' payments...
Phnom Penh, Cambodia davidandbeckyWe headed for Siem Reap for the same reason as many, to see the Temples of Angkor and of course because it was on the way! The bus trip to Siem Reap was rather uneventful although the terrible local TV that you always endure is never a good thing, it was once we got off the bus at the out of town bus station that things got interesting. Being the first westerner off the bus meant that I was target number one for the 50 or so taxi and tuk-tuk drivers all baying for blood. The melee was so grea...
Siem Reap, Cambodia paulontheroadThis trip was organized by my Aunt May. Well we left Malaysia on December 24, 2007 for a 5 days 4 nights stay in Cambodia. My group consisted of 6 people; me, my mum, my stepdad, my aunt, my uncle and my cousin. Well we started early in the morning. I woke up at 3.30AM on December 24, 2007 to get a quick hot shower. Our taxi arrived at 4.00AM on the dot. Packed our luggages into the taxi and soon we were off to LCCT. Our ride just took over 30 minutes to reach the airport. Did all the usual s...

Up early for our long trek to cambodia! Bus picked us up at 8 and we set of to the border. The bus wasn't the comfiest and i got super fidgety! Met another traveler Laura, she's going to do some volunteer work in a cambodian orphanage.

We got off the bus at the border crossing, it was quite an experience to say the least! It was pretty stressful walking between lorries transporting goods, people pushing carts full of fruits and other people on foot! It took about an hour ...
Siem Reap, KH.16, Cambodia toributler... And,

4) Angkor Wat. To save the most famous temple for last and see the sunset there.

A Little Angkor History

The temples at Angkor were built as the capital of Cambodia’s ancient Khmer empire. There are hundreds of temples surviving today which are only a skeleton of the vast kingdom that stretched from Burma to Vietnam. At its height, 1 million people were living there ...
Phumi Ângkôr Krau, KH.16, Cambodia paulfeuerborn... so we ended up not seeing any sunrise but the lack of blue sky didn't deter me from being awestruck by the immensity of this temple. The overall size of this one temple complex beat that of Tenotihuacan, the site of the pyramid of the moon and sun near Mexico City, which is pretty impressive. This park has dozens, maybe even hundreds of temples still undiscovered in the jungle and we spent the whole day seeing one temple after another, each unique in is own way. Some are ...
Siem Reap, Cambodia izunia... walls of Ta Prohm. Roots, vines and vegetation creep over doorways, snake their way through holes in the ceiling and pry their way up through the floors of the temple. I am enthralled.

Day two of our temple adventure brings us to a very similar temple, but we get the added feature of a torrential downpour! Say what!? Oh my gosh, we felt like we were on a movie set! This kind of ...
Siem Reap, KH.16, Cambodia triss68... it was actual daylight and satisfied with today's photographic kill I proceeded towards the temple.

Angkor Wat is simply breathtaking, that much is true. The complex has 5 distinct towers and is surrounded by a large moat to reflect the Hindu cosmos. At the time of its construction it was originally built for the Hindu pantheon before being used by the Buddhists. It was quite a haunting place with many long dark corridors and sounds coming ...
Siem Reap, Cambodia apoc100... any longer, for me it is just pure geology). I survive the heat that along with my fever causes me to sweat massively and wet my shirt as if I was caught in the middle of a tropical storm (to avoid the worst hours of the day, I try to avoid the heat by waking up at dawn and coming back to the hotel by noon). I survive the mosquitoes that annoy me all time of the day (there is no repellent that can get rid of them). I survive the hordes of ...
