Battambang and Around

Several days this entry: At last, Cambodia. This trip really started in 1981 when Leslie and I began our work with Cambodian refugees - we were at it seven days a week, every waking minute when we were not working at our regular jobs. Cambodian refugees were our life from 1981-1986 - an astonishing & very difficult time - and the first time I understood the bedrock reality of God (when I realized I/myself could not possibly be doing what I was doing). Anyway, I am overwhelmed to be here n...

Across the Border!

Here I am again, writing an entry just after saying that I probably wouldn't be able to. We left this morning at about 7am and took a taxi to the bus station. We caught the bus to Aranyaprathet seconds before it pulled away - what a break! We arrived at the border a little after noon and passed through immigration and visas without incident. As we made our way out of Thailand and into Cambodia, a man from a taxi company came over and sold us on his company. He offered us a taxi to Battambang ...

Phnom Penh Sites

The first monument that one sees upon entering Phnom Penh is a metal sculpture of a handgun with its barrel twisted into a knot--a symbol for non-violence. I have seen that same monument at the landing beaches in Normandy as well. I understood DDay, but I had no understanding of the Khmer Rouge at all until after today. The Killing Fields are located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. A large temple, about three stories tall, had skulls of all victims of the mass genocide stacked to the top. In ...

Kuala Lumpur To Pnohm Pen

Took the Spanish blokes advice about avoiding the train for 30ringhit to the airport and took the skybus for 9 which was sound!Got the sky train monorail and then onto a bus direct for the airport for 2hours,but having told me it'd take ages was at the check in desk at Kuala Lumpur Airport for 11.30am and not flying till 3pm! Wasted the 3hours in the airport with no shops and nothing to do and eventually boarded the plane.Sat on the plane for half hour, when we get told to get off as there is ...

Cambodia Recollections

Cambodia summary Overall we didn't enjoy Cambodia as much as other countries we've been to, and in fact we both suffered from the doldrums a little bit. There were a few reasons, we think. There is definitely a palpable sense that the country and its people have been through something bad recently, a sort of underlying sadness, which rubs off on you a little bit. The population is fairly small so there isn't the crazy buzziness that other countries we've been to have had, just because there a...

Daily life in Prey Veng

... start teaching in their own secondary schools after they finish their studies at the RTTC. I could say a lot about these books but the long and short of it is that they are outdated, introduce but don't explain grammar points, and involve subjects that are relevant to life in Cambodia but present them in a way that is sometimes condescending, like suggesting that Cambodian people are not smart enough and lack the necessary skills to start a successful ...

... happened here 30 years ago. Its such a peaceful place now that its hard to imagine people being beaten to death with farming tools so as not to waste bullets. A tree remains where men smashed babies to death while holding their legs before chucking them in the pits with their already dead parents and siblings. After leaving the fields we heading to the notorious S21 where inmates were tortured, beaten, raped before being carted to the fields for the final ...

The contrast of Cambodia

... centre for the Pol Pot regime - very similar emotions as above - and then to the Russian market! This was very different to any other market we have come across in Asia because the vendors really weren't interested in pestering you and pressuring you but instead left you to look around at your own will!
The next two days were, however, probably the best bit of PP! We met a very nice guy, Jim, in Nha Trang and he kindly agreed to take us to the orphanage ...

Trip to the Palace, Killing Fields and S21

... take you around the concentration camp. The former High School setting adds to the atmosphere as former classrooms have around 10 brick built cells in them where the prisoners were chained to the floor. Importantly S21 has been largely left how it was after the Cambodian emancipation. The school still has crude passageways that were smashed through walls to allow ease of access for the Khmer guards. At the end of the tour there is a Video that ...

... force, and the most extreme poverty I have EVER seen. It's one of the saddest things I have ever experienced, especially because all the locals are extremely nice, caring and welcoming - and all they want is some order in their country.

Ok, I'm done soapboxing, sorry but that country really threw me for a loop. I posted a bunch more pics... most of the AWESOME Temples of Angkor - enjoy!

Next stop... Malaysia (and looking forward to it!)
