Several days this entry: At last, Cambodia. This trip really started in 1981 when Leslie and I began our work with Cambodian refugees - we were at it seven days a week, every waking minute when we were not working at our regular jobs. Cambodian refugees were our life from 1981-1986 - an astonishing & very difficult time - and the first time I understood the bedrock reality of God (when I realized I/myself could not possibly be doing what I was doing). Anyway, I am overwhelmed to be here n...
Battambang, Cambodia chaskempHere I am again, writing an entry just after saying that I probably wouldn't be able to. We left this morning at about 7am and took a taxi to the bus station. We caught the bus to Aranyaprathet seconds before it pulled away - what a break! We arrived at the border a little after noon and passed through immigration and visas without incident. As we made our way out of Thailand and into Cambodia, a man from a taxi company came over and sold us on his company. He offered us a taxi to Battambang ...
Battambang, Cambodia dkempThe first monument that one sees upon entering Phnom Penh is a metal sculpture of a handgun with its barrel twisted into a knot--a symbol for non-violence. I have seen that same monument at the landing beaches in Normandy as well. I understood DDay, but I had no understanding of the Khmer Rouge at all until after today. The Killing Fields are located on the outskirts of Phnom Penh. A large temple, about three stories tall, had skulls of all victims of the mass genocide stacked to the top. In ...
Phnom Penh, Cambodia molly.m.fanninTook the Spanish blokes advice about avoiding the train for 30ringhit to the airport and took the skybus for 9 which was sound!Got the sky train monorail and then onto a bus direct for the airport for 2hours,but having told me it'd take ages was at the check in desk at Kuala Lumpur Airport for 11.30am and not flying till 3pm! Wasted the 3hours in the airport with no shops and nothing to do and eventually boarded the plane.Sat on the plane for half hour, when we get told to get off as there is ...
Pnohm Pen, Cambodia scrapironCambodia summary Overall we didn't enjoy Cambodia as much as other countries we've been to, and in fact we both suffered from the doldrums a little bit. There were a few reasons, we think. There is definitely a palpable sense that the country and its people have been through something bad recently, a sort of underlying sadness, which rubs off on you a little bit. The population is fairly small so there isn't the crazy buzziness that other countries we've been to have had, just because there a...
Cambodia, Cambodia timreis... leaving to study and find jobs in nearby Phnom Penh which contributes to the large percentage of human trafficking from the area, and businesses and schools are directly effected by the rain and rice harvests so that many are closed sporadically and without warning as people take to the fields.
And yet despite those reasons, or maybe even for those reasons, there is a small expat community of about ten people in town, not what I was expecting. I was warned by the previous ...
... evening! This time I treated myself to a mani/pedi and a facial. The facial was SO relaxing that I went in to some deep meditative state in which I felt I was sleeping yet I somehow was aware of everything that was going on. Azh and I feel in love with the ladies in the spa; we wanted to wrap the up and take them home with us. Our farewell the second evening was tough, as we knew we wouldn't be ...
Phnom Penh, Cambodia triss68... t be too critical as they were worried about repurcussions.
That evening we checked out a couple of local bars and sampled Cambodian beer....
Sunday, Paul and Jennie left... the rest of us had full intentions of hiring bikes and exploring... Stephanie and Ozzie Bianca did just that, me and the 2 Finnish girls sunbathed, read, ate and drank at the lodge til about3, then got the owner to give us a ride to the lake.... we hung out with the locals we'd met the day before then ...
... delicious late lunch at a restaurant near the Royal Palace. We were going to go to the Royal Palace but it was too expensive so we ended up buying a whole bunch of street kids some food from a street vendor. That evening Nicole and I had dinner at a restaurant, relaxed at the guesthouse and played cards with the Swedish girls. I also had a delicious coconut shake - the best one I have had by far, in fact it was so good I had two! The next day we caught the bus to Siem Reap.
Phnom Penh, Cambodia nicole_sparrow... is lined with 5329 silver tiles lining the floor of the building. The pagoda also has a solid gold life size Buddha statue that is decorated with more than 2000 diamonds, including a 25 carat belly diamond. Seeing this Buddha, Sarah, of course, gave me back the engagement ring that I got her and wanted to upsize (kidding, I know she‘ll give me a dead-arm when she reads this).
The National Museum was full of Khmer relics ...
