Historical Traveler Reviews of Angel Hotel Bury St. Edmunds
Sadly disappointed
from Chris Robins
i should have known by the way the telephone was answered when i booked ,but the staff here could not care less. The hotel is overpriced and they have a poor attitude to customers.
Good service but pricey

Stayed at The Angel for a wedding recently and was greatly impressed with the staff. Who were helpfull, polite and efficient. Our room was in the older part of the hotel and was comfortable and clean but ever so slightly worn, and crying out for air conditioning!!
Car parking can be a problem, as the hotel carpark is very small and you have to rely on the staff to move your car into the public car park at the front of the hotel, which is free between 6pm and 8am.
The food in the hotel was good, but the breakfast room is small and some people had to wait. Although the hotel is imposing and in a prime location the price is too high, considering there is no pool or spa etc.
Better choices than this in Bury St Edmunds

I have been working just outside Bury St Edmunds for a few weeks and, last week, my normal hotel was full so was booked in to the Angel. A few days there was enough, never again.
I think the hotel is very over rated and sells itself more on location and impressive looks from the outside than service, quality and value for money.
In my opinion there are much better (and cheaper) hotels in the area which offer far superior service on food, cleanliness, comfort and general value
My advice is to look around before booking at the Angel, only go there as a last resort
Excellent Breakfast
from casfenglad
I stayed at the hotel several times over a three month period and found the service excellent, one eveinng the roads around the hotel were closed for a Christmas market and the staff had erected plentiful and easy to follow signs to the car park, although I generally used the public car park in front of the hotel which is free between 6pm and 8am.
I found the breakfasts excellent with choice of full Englsh breakfast or other cooked options including smoked salmon and scrambled eggs which was a large plateful to set anyone up for the day. I only ate dinner in the hotel one evening as there are plenty of other restaurants within walking distance of the hotel.
The beds are extremely comfortable and the rooms are clean and well equiped. There are two sections to the hotel the older part at the front and the newer part at the rear. The rooms in the older part seem to lack lighting but they are very quiet and there is little "noise polution" from other rooms or outside. The newer rooms are well lit but the walls are very thin and I could hear my neighbour switching their lights on and off and flushing the toile.
Hit & miss

Very disappointing stay at this hotel. Maybe some rooms and some service is better than others but I thought they rely too much on the location (which is perfect) and do not obviously provide consistent service & standards.
Bedroom I was given was shabby and felt unclean. Staff not very attentive and I thought the food, while pleasant, was far too expensive for the standard and quality delivered.
The View!!

The view is great, the service well beyond the norm offering care and friendliness. Wonderful!
Very Impressed

I cannot fault my stay at the Angel. Staff were most helpful and friendly, the food was superb with two very different restaurants to choose from, and my bedroom was very comftable. I would highly recomend this hotel to anyone visting the area. Bury itself is a great town with the Abbey Gardens, Cathedral and the market - a great town to visit.
Great service, comfortable hotel

We've stayed here half a dozen times over three years and can strongly recommend the Angel. It's a rather rambling superior three star spread over several interconnected buildings in a great central location opposite the Abbey. We prefer the modern stylish and relatively large a/c rooms at the back, but have also stayed in a lovely traditional four-poster at the front. What makes the hotel a cut above the rest locally is the excellent and very friendly service, from reception, bar and restaurant. The staff are young but very attentive without being in-your-face. Food in the restaurant is very good for the area (nearest competitor would be in Lavenham) and it's a nice place to share a bottle of wine over dinner.
We don't recognise the concerns raised by the other reviewers - our car has always been taken care of very well in the CCTV-monitored park, and security at the hotel is exactly as would be expected in any European or North American hotel.
Not the best

I read with interest the two reviews and can not say I agree with the one regarding good security in the hotel. My issues started early in my stay and I decided to move hotels after the first night because I was not comfortable with the staff's ability given the resources they had available - they claimed the CCTV was not adequate so you will have to make your own mind up.
The hotel is quaint, in an Old-English sort of way (although in need of some renovation in areas) but I think there are better and safer hotels in Bury St Edmunds. The town itself is well worth a visit.
Be careful
from WAFC
Be careful when visiting the Angel Hotel in Bury St Edmunds. The Security at the hotel is far from adequate. They claim to have CCTV to protect the visitors but when it was needed during my stay it was of no use.
Be very careful when leaving your car in the hotel car park. The hotel makes no checks and I had serious damage to my car which left me significantly out of pocket.
I would not trust the hotel enough to stay there again.
