Today was a public holiday (see yesterday's entry) and everything was closed except the cafés which were doing a great business. The sun was out for a lot of the day too.
The school kids were out in force again with their marching and drumming and having a great time. There were priests and lots of dignataries laying wreaths and then more marching and drumming through the lined streets. It was quite moving to see.
We love the Greeks. They ...
... face war. The answer was 'No', and Greece was attacked.
In Naxos Town today all the primary and secondary school children marched and drummed their way to a Cenotaph and laid wreaths. Tomorrow is a public holiday and the whole town celebrates.
We hired yet another small car and set off north around the coast over more hills and fertile valleys and climbed up to the tops of rocky, misty mountains ...
... gorgeous vistas, beaches, and more great Greek cuisine. We rented a car for one day but could easily have filled another day with a 4x4. I was surprised by the arid landscape beyond the fertile valley of the interior, yet this is an island with more green space than others in the Cyclades. I suppose I associate islands (Vancouver Island, Ireland) with verdure but such is not the case in Greece.
We attended a cultural evening of music and dance one night ...
The following day, Ivan wanted to take us to the other side of the island so we could experience some infamous pies. So we docked and headed to the only restaurant in this smaller town and shared some food including cheese pies and chicken pies as well as a tomato and cheese based dish that looks like vomit but tastes delicious.
Also on this day Ivan wanted to take us to a part of the ...
... daytime. Got back to the room and woke up around 1.
This was the only night I took out my camera. This was probably my best night but it's pretty much an average night in Ios. Also there's a lot of this night that is a haze. Luckily Matt is writing a book about his European travels and assured me there was quite a bit of "book-worthy" material from my shena****ns. I'll post about it when it's published.
