The bears and volcanoes of Katmai (Alaska)

... how huge the eruption was! The place reminded me of the landscapes generated by the eruptions of Mont St Helens in 1980 in the U.S. and Mount Pinatubo in 1991 in the Philippines.

Such a place built by a recent volcanic eruption reminds us that our planet is not dead. More large-scale eruptions are likely to occur in Katmai or elsewhere in the world. There were no casualties during the 1912 ...

... I hate these overnight flights...)

Anchorage airport is interesting as it is a cargo jet haven. They must just stop to refuel from Asia - the cargo carriers here have been Eva Air, China Airlines, Korean Airlines, Asiana, UPS, Shanghai...none seem to empty any cargo...just park for an hour or two.

It's been a great trip...pictures will be on Flickr at http://www.flickr.com/photos/pmbell64/c ollections/72157622360839812/

Prince William Sound - Day 10

We woke up early as we had to be at the ferry terminal by 07:00. Packing up camp was fast and we were there in plenty of time so we detoured for coffee. Yum!

The ferry trip took about 6 hours. We had breakfast onboard and then proceded out on deck where we stayed for a good part of the trip. The panorama was again spectacular and our cameras were constantly clicking. One of the highlights was seeing a seal fighting off seagulls to keep ...

Visiting Anchorage

... t comfortable with the variance and ordered another sonogram to hopefully ascertain a specific date. Right now, he’s saying he’ll induce Oct 9th if she doesn’t go into labor before then, but we’ll see.

While I was typing, the Ulich’s called from Soldotna. Everything is fine at their place. They invited us to come back but Wendell is anxious to start our return trip so looks like we’ll leave here on Sunday.

Shopping day

The last night at Alaska. No specific schedule, just shopping, and easy short drive to the berry farm to see the chocolate fountain. Our flight was like 1:28 a.m., so we got to the airport around 10 p.m. Finally, the night fell. I was so glad to see the night. My eyes felt comfortable. No wonder we all felt sore for the eyes, the sun's been shining all day long!

settling in after a long haul

... friends who happen to have rental property that happens to be coming open. They agree to let us rent until closing. A couple of job interviews and more appointments are squeezed into all of the above and things seem to be looking up. The only thing left is to do is to get an anxious female who is pregnant for the first time to quit having mood swings. Yeah. Anyone who ...

back in anchorage

... a quick dip and then carried on. The long daylight afforded us good driving time and we covered the distance from San Francisco to Anchorage in 6 days. With the tent it might have been nice to stop and enjoy the summer visions along the wilderness. But with paying for actual hotels (no hostels here buddy!) we just had to put the petal down. That brings you to Anchorage. Photos will be up soon. The next entry will sum up the trip and tell you what we have been doing with ourselves since our return.

... enormous silt flats as the tide was out and evidently the flats are treacherous - like quick sand. We continued to Anchorage which was a large spread out city. We went to the weekend markets and then to the Anchorage Museum of History and Art. It was extremely interesting and had scenes representing various people and the history of Alaska. Anchorage reminded me a bit of Darwin.

Cruising in a camper through the Yukon

Erik and I are back in Anchorage after seeing a bit of Alaska. In the three week RV trip we drove about 2300 miles and crossed the border into Canada, through the Yukon, British Columbia, back in the United States, through British Columbia and the Yukon again and back again into the United States. phew. We saw plenty of critters, three porcupines (squashed), beavers, ptarmigans, a coyote, bald eagles, squirrels, to name a few. Some of the ...

... He's a good bloke with a heart of gold. This is his 5th Exodus trip in the last year! Going all the way too. Sally - (30) The baby of the group - GP from Southampton - really sweet and peaceful to be around - Sharing a tent with Sally at the moment as neither of us want to share with Glenda as she snores like a horse! Going all the way to Argentina. Rob - (late thirties) - Well read, well educated, looks like a rugby player, sounds like Colin Firth (we call him Nancy) - his ...
