Ah...Madrid!

... almost entirely European paintings from the 14th to 19th centuries absolutely and as one would expect the emphasis is on Spanish masters. It has a huge selection of Goyas, El Grecos and Velazquezes, but also had many other pieces by Rubens, Botticelli, Raphael, Durer, Titian, Rembrant and Bosch. I absolutely loved it and was moved to see so much humanity and beauty in one place. It really is amazing to see these masterpieces in person when you have only ever seen ...

Day One

... Basically you have no choice but to siesta because all of spain closes down from 2-5. And never call anyone during this. You will get your head ripped off!

I went on a walk today and found this chinese second hand store, basically like dollar store or ocean state job lot. For 3 euros i got soap, body wash, paper and a toliet cleaner. Pretty sweet :)

We are all probably going to Hazame Reir today aka Funny People the movie. Should be good.

Last Words from Madrid: the end of an era

... in such a high pitch as if she heard or understood nothing that you said)
e. Pues nada...(well, alright then)
f. Yogúr-the manner in which she said Yogurt literally cracked me up every time she said it following a meal. As such, it has easily become my favorite word in the Spanish language in terms of pronunciation)

European Travels: Spain-Madrid Day 1

... it was a good cultural experience. We all danced quite a bit, but of course not like the way Americans dance. While we were dancing, the Spaniards asked me to do the Adrian dance, so all of us did it, and then my brothers and other friends joined in too, it was really funny. Next we all had some more drinks and Rocky met this one girl and started dancing with her. We all thought it was amusing and took pictures, and then the rest of the us were just dancing ourselves ...

... and look me head to foot. It would often be followed by a disapproving look. Even in the Toledo, the women would give me evil looks! Why? Can anyone please explain?! People in the city of Madrid are not polite. Everyone pushes past and won't even say excuse me. You are simply pushed out of the way. And in the museums its even worse! The workers roll the eyes and say things they shouldn't, especially as ...

El Rastro, El Retiro and the Zoo.

I know, I know, it's been almost two months since the last update. Motivation is a bit low on the blogging front these days. There's been no fancy trips or excursions the last couple of months, but at least I finally managed to visit the somewhat famous El Rastro Sunday morning flea market..., and the Zoo in the huge Casa de Campo park, close to where I used to live before I moved into the city. I hope you enjoy the photos until I get back the writing bug.

The Serrated Mountain

Montserrat - (means Serrated Mountain) is the holy mountain for the Catalan people. Here according to legend an image of the Black Madonna was found at 'Santa Cova' cave, so now it is the home of Our Lady of Montserrat and a Benedictine monastery with almost a thousand years of history. After arriving at the station we took a cable ...

El Toros: bulls of Madrid

Hanging around in Madrid until Sunday night for my train to Lisbon held one unexpected benefit - it allowed me to catch an afternoon at the toros (bull fights). It's not a pretty sight really and goes against my usual grave concern for the welfare of animals at the hands of man, but in Spain it is a cultural experience handed down ...

Day 2 - Madrid to Lima

... bez problému - podle informací čerpaných z internetu jsme tlačítko červená/zelená vůbec nezmáčkli, usmáli se na celníky a prosli. V hale čekal obrovský, řvoucí zástup naháněčů, kterým bychom se pravděpodobně museli prodrat, kdybychom nevyuzili probíhající úpravy snůrových směrovátek (víte co myslím) a nevyklouzli bokem. První úkol - vyměnit peníze. Prvn ...
