Some people can be seen descending on their butts.

Bring a lunch, wander through the beehive huts, watch the puffins taking off and landing at their nests on the cliff face and marvel at how difficult life would have been here 1500 years ago. Give thanks you weren’t the poor cow whose home was the 200 square feet of flat grass halfway up.

A Little Bit of Heaven

... some soup and brown bread, we drove back to our favorite beach. Today there were a few people there, but only one person had driven all the way down like we do. The tide was out, so there was a lot more beach than we’ve had any other time. Com Dhineol or the Ryan’s Daughter beach is my favorite spot, and I left a little bit of my heart there when we drove away.

We stopped at the shop at Slea Head and John picked up a few things before we went ...

Driving the Dingle

... obelisk with symbols) and a mysterious sundial. It had some remarkably intact carvings and very old as well as recent graves in the churchyard.

A stone ring fort was supposed to be nearby, and we drove up and down the same road twice before I spotted the name of the fort on a stone by the road. The fort itself was over a rock wall, so I waited while John explored a bit. We find the signage here to be somewhat of a challenge. When the sign (if there is one) has an arrow, the turn is ...

Moving On Down the Road

... tide was out, and we thought we’d do it another day. We did drive down to Menard Castle, or what is left of it. There’s a lovely little beach there near some cliffs. Finally we came into Dingle Town, a lively fishing village with lots of pubs, shops, and music.

Dingle also has a famous resident. Fungie the Dolphin lives out in the bay, and boats can be hired to go see him. We booked the 2:00 sailing with about 25 other people ...

The Banshee, pork sausages and spilled wine

... to our accommodation 4 hours later. It is a lovely guesthouse right on the water and with lovely views. We also met Muffy, the resident mutt who is 14 years old and barks a welcome whenever we pull up in the driveway. Our room was finally ready and Maggie was much happier to see us this time round! I would have to say that this was the nicest room so far too, made better when I learned that we had free Wi-fi in our room so we could watch the Bombers v Saints game at last ...

Ring O' Dingle

I must confess I've cheated a bit here and copied and pasted an email to my mom. That's the glory of an electronic journal though. If I had been hand typing this ***** there would be no way that a) it would be legible enough for even me to read nor b) it would be of any length or significance (not to say that this one is). We got an uneventful 5:15 flight to Dublin and after a few false starts, ended with a stick shift, right hand ...

... and leaders including Jerry Adams. The carnage and reprisals by government-sympathetic Protestant militants rang in the headlines from 1972 until the mid-1990's when Jerry Adams decried violence and dissolved the militancy. Today Ireland is a land speckled with remnants of Celtic culture encouraged by the masses scouring for it in tour busses from Dublin to Dingle. The old still argue about politics while the Nuevo generation pursues opportunities within the European ...

Kenmare – Dingle – Kilrush

... were in the town of Kilrush, and given the day was drawing to a close, we decided not to drive any further but rather try for a B&B here. Pulling outside a stately two storey house I think we all thought it looked too posh for us. Inside was no different, with the living rooms and bedrooms packed with period furniture that made it look more like a museum-piece than a functioning family home. With our last two B&Bs ...

A day for tears

... At this point you should be able to look up ahead and slightly to the left and see a 15 foot high white concrete cross. After 20-30 minutes of a moderate climb, crawl through the barbed wire "gate" (sheep barriers) and continue to the white cross. The cross is almost in the middle of the mass graves of thousands of famine victims. Be careful, the ground is quite uneven as the graves were "trench style." On a clear day ...
