Mr and Mrs Saigon

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) at 5am having caught a bus to Da Nang and then the overnight train from Da Nang. The train was the same as our train from Hanoi so it was fine but we were glad to arrive! During our taxi ride from the train station to the hotel, we noticed people eating their breakfast on the streets at the same time as the tourists were still drinking from the night before in the bar across the road! We only had one day in Ho Chi Minh City so we didn't see muc...

A Week in HCMC is a Long Time...

Stephanie and I arrived by bus in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) on Saturday, April 18, 2009. Immediately after getting off the bus this woman approached us and insisted we have a look at her rooms... they were $7 so we didn't argue thinking what's the harm in looking. She took us down this long, dark, twisted alley to what appeared to be her home... like I mean we figured it was actually a room in her house! We didn't even go inside... we decided that it was not the best place to be wandering down ...

Day 2 in HCMC

Thursday was a day for finalising arrangements for the weekend and for Kay to stock up on some groceries in preparation for the hoards that are arriving. Chris and I are happy to tag along - grocery shopping in another country is always an interesting experience and gives another insight into different cultures. Today we head to the Metro store, which is more like a huge warehouse than a supermarket. As well as foodstuffs and the expected groceries, it sells clothing, motor scooters, commerci...

Sightseeing and Cyclo Touring

Its hot!! Hot and really muggy!! We have aircon in our rooms at the An An 2 Hotel, but as soon as we get outside it hits us. Our first stop this morning is to meet up with Pete and Kay and the rest of their overseas friends, in a café downtown for breakfast. Penny, John, David and us have already decided to do a bit of sightseeing today and several of the other couples join us and we head up Dong Khoi St towards the War Remnants Museum. Its getting hotter and hotter and soon we're dripping in...

... dangerous, if you are not used to it.There are three million of them in the city.

Taxis? It can drain your pockets very quickly. This must be one of the cities of the world where the taxi fare is ridiculously expensive.Never pay your fare in US currency, the mistake I made when I first got here.

Coming from Cambodia where the US Dollar is common denomination anywhere you go and you don't have to worry too much about exchange rate, I assumed ...

... called “Requiem” which displayed photos taken by journalists killed during the war. Like I said, a sobering experience although very much biased against the US with no explanation about the war itself, only the victimization of the Vietnamese at the hands of American soldiers.

We decided to split up on the way back to the hotel as Bill wanted to check out the Apocalypse Now bar and I had blogging to catch up on. He said he'd be about 20 minutes ...

I'm not american, stop hating me old woman....

Argh, problem with moving around so fast is that blogging falls seriously behind, but it is currently 11.30 here, and I shall fight through weariness in the name of accurate travel blogging. So the second day of Ho Chi Minh....I woke up thinking 'good god if I here a horn one more time I may scream', and promptly heard another one. Thus screamed into pillow so as not to wake others. But nevertheless pressed on with the day, with ...
