Expecting something in the region of 10,000+ aircraft, in no time at all, the homebuilt camping area filled up.
There was no need for an alarm clock – each morning we were awoken by aircraft engines just before 6am! Not much point in trying to go back to sleep so we made use of the excellent trailer shower facilities (new for this year) with oodles of hot water. Well, we headed this way so we could spend the night and take a Lake Michigan ferry across to Michigan.
Unfortunately, the only reservations available are either VERY early (6 AM) or VERY LATE (7 PM) so we're having dinner to discuss.
The other real problem is:
- The ferry leaving that's closest to us is an old model and take 5.5 hours.
- The ferry leaving 2 hrs south of us is a jet ferry ...
... and while there were shuttle buses running continuously, these were very full at the start and end of the daily events, so we walked that a couple of times.
The weather was nearly perfect - mostly clear skies and temperatures in the mid-20s during the day.

We’d just finished our supper when Vernon (another Defiant owner) joined us after a 12 hr drive from the Carolinas. We found out that the gate nearest the camping area closed at 2230 hrs – Steve had dropped us off with five minutes to spare!
