If this little town looks like a movie set, that's because it was. Several times in fact, including Dances with Wolves.
There is an interesting museum, with many old photos, antique tools and games, and a couple player pianos. And the buildings are authentically dusty and creak noisily from the prairie wind.
On the way back home, we wanted to make some extra money. So we stopped in Pine Ridge to work for our old family friends, the Hay's, after we filled up gas for $20.58. While we were there, we mowed their lawns for them and did other yard work along with walking there two dogs. We got to stay there for free and ate the food that they made for us.We stayed there for 2 days and on the 27th of September, we will continue to head home.
Had the KOA breakfast and chatted with the two ladies who were serving it. They’re clearly both older than I am and they and their husbands are itinerant workers for KOA for a free place to stay and a salary. They’re employed for 6 months for 2 to 4 days a week which gives them time to explore on days off. One’s been on the road for five years and the other leaves her home in California during the hot summer months to do this. ...
An early breakfast and we get fueled up from our Super 8 hotel and make our way up to Mount Rushmore to see the four presidents faces carved out of the rock - Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodor Roosevelt. An awesome sight - we did the touristy thing and paid our 11 dollars to get up close and personal with them.
From there we go onto the Crazy Horse monument which is a rock carving in the making of ...
- 11:00 a.m. Since I got here so late last night I decided to sleep in this morning. After I woke up I went to get ice and hade breakfast.
- 12:00 p.m. Walked to go see Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse in the daytime. It looked very different then at night. Almost four times as big. Crazy Horse is still under construction but, is still huge. The details are amazing in the face.
