... city at 5:00 in the morning or a stroll along the sand on the beach, I always have the potential to make an impact on people and let them impact me. This island, my friends, the hospital and this culture have impacted me significantly more than I thought they would, and I can only hope that I could do the same for them. Now that I've had my five weeks, I'm ready to go home and get ready for the rest of my life--it's been a good one so far, but I can tell it's only going to get better!

... Child Psychiatry and Pediatrics, leaving the residency with certification in all three specialties. This is a very exciting opportunity to not only specialize, but also to generalize and provide primary care services to the developing children of our nation (while also improving early intervention in mental health disorders). As of right now, this is the plan for me, but I'm sure that that decision will develop and evolve over time in medical school.

... so when he/she tries to translate for the physician, certain ideas get lost. I realized this week that by becoming a doctor, I am taking on a much bigger responsibility than most people can handle: to understand my patients and communicate to them the way they can understand. Hopefully my French and Spanish come in handy to this end, but regardless, there is a way to speak to patients, and as a doctor, I will need to master this communication.

... since it was in the south we had absolutely perfect weather. It was extremely sunny and warm, but not uncomfortably hot or humid--perfect weather for the beach. The south is the most popular tourist area on the island, so everyone on the beach spoke an awkward mix of Spanish, English, French and German. Today we had a really funny patient in internal medicine who I have to talk about here. Her name was Irene, and she didn't speak a lick of Spanish because she's Scottish (though she has lived in Tenerife for upwards of 20 years). She was in the hospital because she had some kind of serious dementia and diabetes.
