In Kathmandu - far out man

Back in the mountains trying to arrange a trip to a place 30 kms or so outside the city to go and see the Himalayas
Went into Durbar Square this morning: lots of temples but it was traffic dodging time as there were scooters, bikes and cars whizzing in and out and in between the temples - very difficult to take photos when you have one eye on the traffic so you dont get run over!

So far Kathmandu is fab, it's not too cold during the day but at night the temperature does drop. Had to...

Mossis, Borders and Controversy!

Many hours after leaving Varanasi we arrived on the slowest train ever, ever to Gorakpur - it was dark and we'd heard about a couple of places to stay. We'd also heard about the larger than usual vicious mossis so wanted some protection from those. What better than your very own room complete with lots of mossis and a seedy bar to eat particularly bad fried food in? Yes please! We weren't the only ones slightly mifted with our surroundings. We met Nazeen from Rishikesh and a couple of Israeli...

Check before you travel!

Nepal has been a good experience with friendly people. They are developing fast and the place is a a real mix of old and new. For example, I watched an old man try to use an escalator but not understand how it worked. Kathmandu is extremely hectic but a fun place to be, with Thamel a haven for Tourists with hundreds of tour companies. the only downside being the dust and fumes. Nagarkot was a beautiful place with stunning views. I definitely would recommend people to come here.

We sta...

On top of the world

Our return to Kathmandu started extremely well, with a flight around Mount Everest! We got there early and after some delays were ushered into our 16 seater. The hour long flight was spectacular with the only downside being the increasing drain on the holiday fund!

We returned to the main town and did some sightseeing around Dhurbur Square, which again contained many temples. It is outside the tourist area of Thamel and as a result really is hectic with a large increase in street hassl...

We had our last Nepali lesson this week and although our teacher wasnt always the easiest bloke to understand, we realised how much Nepali we had picked up in our short time here. Especially seeing as we ...

... weed, take a look man, want to smoke" or trying to get you into your shops. There is stuff everywhere you don't want to step in. We end up getting lost in this madness for about an hour. Everything looks the same, trekking outfitter. travel agent, shipping company, wool shop, knife shop, trinket shop, repeat 5000 times. Once we finally stumbled into our hotel again, we decide we need a couple drinks so we just walk over to the ...

"As usual, your plans change," Surya laughs as he says this over dinner at a restaurant in Thamel where they only hire deaf-mute waiters. Nepal is both so delayed and yet so progressive.

They have a caste system where so-called higher castes will not drink from the same water source as the untouchables, and they consider women second class citizens in several ways, but they will set up places where only disabled people are ...

Kathmandu Early Days

... fyi, they prefer dollars and euros to rupees.

After Pashupati, it was back to Kathmandu and my date with some other travelers for St. Paddy's Day. Strange that my first ever green beer was in Nepal, but that's how it turned out. Best were the Nepali waiters wearing "Kiss me I'm Irish" shirts and funny green hats. But it didn't take long for the bar owner to let us know that the staff wanted to be kissed by the girls of our group, not the guys.
