The Big One

Today is the day we get to visit probably the most famous building in the world. To leave India without seeing the Taj Mahal would be like visiting Egypt and not seeing the Pyramids - although I do know a man that did that!!! Martin has seen it before many years ago in as he would put it the good old days before he met me :) but I can tell even he is excited at the prospect of going back.
Looking at it from the prison of it's creator the first thing that struck me is that it is bigger than...

India - Taj Mahal

We were up at 5am today so we have been ready for bed since we got up but there was plenty to keep us awake! We went to a place called Red Fort first which was a beautiful gigantic old building which had carvings and architecture inspired by all different religions. Lunch was brilliant, I had a vegetarian Thali which has lots of different curries and Joe had a hot chicken masala. The food is quite similar in some ways to indian food at home but it tends to have less meat if any at all. We mad...

Visit to the Taj Mahal

I knew almost nothing about the Taj Mahal other than it was very beautiful and one of the wonders of the world. My 95 year old mother had told me it was a love story and asked that I bring her back something that told the story and a replica of the Taj Mahal. What I learned is that the Taj Mahal is really a tragedy. The Taj Mahal, (Crown Palace) is a mausoleum built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan as a tribute to his third wife - Empress Muntaz Mahal - who was the love of his life, bore him 14 c...

True love- Taj Mahal

Agra Agra was an interesting place~ the forts, the markets, the food and of course the Taj Mahal. We started off our day at 5 am ( in Delhi ) and left for the train station. Once on the trian we grabbed our seats and had a 2 hours long train ride to Agra. Once here we tried to get a taxi to take us to our hotel, the Amar Yatri Niwas, but they would not take us. When we finally found out why we could not leave (or anyone else for that matter ) it was about 15 minitues after our train had dropp...

Agra

After a disappointing breeze through stay in Delhi yesterday, where we visited only the dusty neighborhood of our hotel and had a quick (yet delicious) dinner at the city center (Connaught Place), we joined our Gap Adventure group for an early train ride to Agra, the home of the famous Taj Mahal. While much smaller than I imagined this "largest monument of love" (as the guide books like to call it) is still pretty extraordinary. Built as a tomb for his beloved wife, Shah Jahan's white marbl...

... foolish photographs like the jump for joy and lining up shots so it looked like we were lifting the top off the main dome of the Taj as though it was a butler's serving plate, lame really.

The Taj Mahal is actually a sad tribute to love, it's a mausoleum built by Emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal who died giving birth to their 14th child. Poor Jahan apparently had some serious karma debts to pay and not long after the Taj was finished, he was ...

The Taj Mahal

So we arrived in Agra yesterday morning around 5:00am after taking the bus from Jaipur. The bus ride was pretty uncomfortable, though Cory and I both had the opportunity to get some sleep (though not much). We ended up getting into Agra earlier than anticipated, at least an hour ahead of schedule (perhaps because the roads are so much less congested at night? I mean who has ever gotten anywhere early by plane, train, or bus?). In normal circumstances ...

... a prepaid rickshaw from the station (after all the warning we'd been given about the scams and general negative air that abounded toward tourists in Agra, we weren't taking any chances) to our guesthouse. A typical Indian operation- a decent room constructed of nice materials that had just fallen to grottiness from incessant ********** (or lack of) cleaning by lackadaisical men.

We woke up after a heat addled half sleep ...

... the single sleeper next door. This sounded more like my luck. The new compartment was spacious enough though and I prepared myself for a long ride. Ten minutes later the conductor came over and said I was on the wrong bus. Now this is more like it. The sleeper compartment on the new bus was, to be kind, a shambles. There was no curtain, no pillow, the window was broken and it was right next to the constantly slamming door near the driver. "I'm not ...

... Paharganj area altogether. We stayed at a hotel in the giant radial hub area known as Connaught Place. Although we could scarcely believe how our attitudes had changed, we found ourselves relieved to be back in Delhi. The chief delights were that nobody stared at us, there is a huge selection of places to eat (we actually found a Pizza Express and dined on authentic pizza with wine) and there were plenty of things to see which we had missed out last time. We took a rickshaw out ...
